Sort of a half spinoff of Chicken with his groin problems...

So I was diagnosed with a S.L.A.P. tear of the labrum in my left shoulder. Doc put me on some anti-inflammatory meds and other than that there isn't much I can do but sit and wait. It is driving me crazy...as this particular injury affects weight-lifting activities, sports I can play, etc.

Any Oters had this before who would like to share their knowledge on how to deal with this particular injury? Any physical therapy exercises you did that helped in particular? any and all advice is much appreciated!

TIA

Tore my labrum in my left shoulder 5 years ago. I had arthoscopic surgery on it months later. Recovery time is about 6 to 9 months.

Yeah, have fun with the physical therapy.

One of the worst pains I've ever had in my life.

I was diagnosed with Shoulder tenitis in my right shoulder (throwing shoulder), and have gone to some physical therapy sessions for it. The exercise that absolutely KILLED me was sort of like a reverse butterfly movement. They had a machine specifically for this, but I will try to explain it as best as I can. You start with your arm pinned to your chest almost as if you had your hand over your heart for the National Anthem. Then with some type of weight (machine or resistance bands), you move your forearm outward as if your arm was a revolving door. With enough resistance, or weight, you will feel it and it's going to hurt.

They also had me lay down and act as if I was throwing a ball. In the pull back motion they would stop me, and then they would rotate my shoulder back in a position it's not supposed to go to stretch it out more. That hurt like a bitch. All in all, it didn't really help in the long run because I still have pain in my shoulder when I make a concerted effort to throw with any type of force.

Hope your shoulder gets better soon. You may just be better off getting surgery

you should probably go to the store and buy a box of tampons for your bleeding vagina!

seriously though, good luck! I have shoulder issues, and after 2 mri's they can't find anything wrong.

There are exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles around it, but you should ultimately have surgery if it's bothersome. Boss went through the same thing last year and said surgery (albeit being in a sling for 6 weeks sucked) was the best decision ever.

Man, honestly it's probably not going to heal up all the way with just pt. I put my surgery off for almost 3 years trying to get my shoulder back right. It'd start feeling better, then as soon as I got active again it'd start hurting again. Go ahead and have the scope. The post op therapy and recovery time suck, but it's the only thing that will make it right again

Did you try a CT scan or an injected MRI? That's how they saw the tear in my labrum and that I had chipped a bone in my shoulder socket.

Go see Dr. Hatzis at BR orthropedic. He will fix you and make all those activities enjoyable again.

My PT says 85% can get better w/o surgery. Of course, he's selling PT. We shall see.

Well it's weird...it doesn't really hurt when I make a golf swing. There are very specific movements that bother it - like throwing a ball with the left arm or if I was dumb enough to try and bench press right now as an example.

But yes, my golf season is all I am worried about right now with this thing

That's the next step...the medicine is Step 1 and I go back next week to reevaluate. At that point we will decide whether to do an MRI etc.

I can throw a football but can no longer throw a baseball with any pop. Arm is dead and gone.

Can't do declines anymore but so be it.

we did xrays, fortunately all bone structures looked good. If I had to guess, it is probably a minor tear but just enough to be bothersome.

The problem is that as I understand the labrum is cartilage and tissue, not muscle, much harder for your body to rebuild

Was in the same boat. Had 3 MRI that showed nothing. The second two were with saline and dye to inflate and color my tissue. Still nothing. Asked them to scope anyway and when they did they found a 60% rotator cuff tear and a 50% labrum tear. MRIs do not show everything. Especially in a complex joint like your shoulder

Empty can test. Hold you arms straight out with your thumbs pointed toward the floor and have some one push down on your wrist while you try to resist.

If you can't hold your arm up with just a little downward force applied you probably need to look into getting surgery. You'll lose only one season. You'll make it.

Went to doc for my shoulder pain as well. In a nutshell, he told me to take a bunch of anti-inflammatory and it would subside- which it didn't...he did do an X-ray that showed nothing. I always sleep with my arm up underneath my pillow, but that is too painful to do anymore

No, haven't tried that....I did change some of my workout routine. there were a few exercises that would tear my shoulder apart (mainly incline bench), so I quit doing those, and it seems to have helped.
I also used to sleep on my stomach with my arms under my pillow, and when I went to pt the therapist told me that's one of the worst things for your shoulders.

lately my shoulders have felt pretty good, but every now and then they'll get inflamed for a few days
