I still would have gotten it. My best friend would not, but he still got into the LSU honors college, which had a 27 minimum score and graduated top of his class with one B in all of college. Moral of the story, the minimum should be 27 to match the honors college, but I fully support increasing it.

My MCAT turned out much different than my ACT, but that was only after years of learning how to prepare for exams. I was in honors classes with 2 guys in high school who scored 32's on their ACTs but flunked out of LSU after their freshmen years.

I would have put it slightly lower (like a 26), but i'd be ok with that.

That is why High School GPA is a great metric for seeing how well a student will do in college.
It shows long term commitment to achieving excellence in the classroom. In all manners of ways.

Daniel Tosh said it best concerning this.

Don't you love it when people in school are like, 'I'm a bad test taker.' You mean you're stupid. Oh, you struggle with that part where we find out what you know? @rebekahallen: Stat Rep. Larry Bagley is in disbelief that the ACT score min for TOPS could be 28. "Surely, you're not correct," he says to LOSFA dir.
Who wouldn't be surprised a lot of state reps couldn't get a 28?
I'll raise my hand first

The problem is it is so difficult to compare GPA's school to school.
Posted on 2/14/16 at 3:06 pm to tigerskin
I was going to say a minimum of a 3.0 and a 24 ACT for the bottom and a 3.7 and 28 for full waiver.

Fine, but don't you agree it is unfair to discount GPA entirely and go for a really high ACT score?

No it isn't.
Do you know why? Because I'm smarter than my ACT score says I am.
Oh, I think I get it. You're smarter than your test scores, you just can't prove it

the 3.0 should also have to be maintained in college to keep the financial aid.
Agree completely. I had to keep a 3.0 to maintain my scholly at TCU... and that was WAAAAY harder to get than TOPS.

I say the only truth is with any standard there will be outliers.
However, to function as a standard and a society we can't create numerous exceptions to fit outliers. All that leads to is inefficiency and more exceptions.
Therefore, while it's tough, you must be excluded.

Also recently thought of something else.
I had several friends in high school that graduated with like a 2.7 GPA and a 21 on the ACT, which qualified them for TOPS. Nearly all of them went to Nicholls because with TOPS all they really had to pay for was books and gas to get to and from school. They all went to college for the hell of it because the majority of the cost was paid for by TOPS.
Only one of them lasted past the first semester, and he dropped out after transferring to SouthEastern.
In order to keep TOPS going cases like this need to stop.

Agree that GPA should also be incorporated. It probably will be.

GPA is more of a measure of determination, rather than intelligence. Anyone of above average intelligence can have a great GPA if they are willing to put in the time and effort to study.
ETA: both of which are integral in college success, so I'm assuming that GPA would still be a consideration. As stated previously, GPA varies too much across schools, so it doesn't make sense that it would be the most weighted factor.

Great. This should have been the standard from the start of this program.

@rebekahallen: Roughly 9000 students would be eligible for TOPS if standards changed to min of 28, plus low income req. That's 37,500 less than today.
