Some people are smart and just don't test well on standardized tests.
Never quite understood this reasoning. Is it that these people can't sit still and focus on a test? Or they have never taken a test before? Or they've never taken a test with multiple choices? Surely even special needs kids get extra time if that is the problem.

More of an impact on kids sitting around in school, not students.

kids who take the ACT are planning to go to college. the average nightmare kid in a shite public school isn't taking the ACT.

i scored a 33 without prep
took it again with prep got a 35
if you are reasonably intelligent 30 is the bar to clear, it's not that difficult
it's the equivalent of a B

TOPS as constituted is fiscal insanity and a gross waste of public funds akin to wealth confiscation. I would rather they just came out and said its welfare, and base it on income instead of grades

those students aren't even taking the ACT, dear

Oh, I agree. Just putting a cushion under the "huge impact" people think it will be having.

a 30 is the 95th percentile

so 5% of the population is "reasonably intelligent" ?

Yea, I don't think that's right.

There are plenty of B students in a given class, but not plenty making a 30.

I don't believe it. People will cry racism, and nothing will change

Full TOPS: 3.5 and 26
Half: 3.0 and 24
Quarter: 2.5 and 23

GPA and test scores can balance each other out. For example, if someone with a 34 has a 3.0, they should get a full ride

My sister had a 4.0 with many AP classes, but maxed out at 26 on her ACT. I had like a 2.3 and a 32. After her first semester in college, she has a 4.0 and just started receiving scholarship offers that'll pay her full tuition ($55k). After my first semester, I had a 0.75, and was basically dropped from TOPS tight there. Perfect example of differences between students

you want to know why asiasn do so well in math? they believe math ability is a learned trait and not some sorcery

and you're not just rolling up to the ACT with its trig and pre-calc questions and naturally understanding them without a knowledge base, regardless

So if you get a 28 you receive TOPS no matter what. If you score under then they will look at household income to determine need? That's what I just heard and I guess it seems reasonable.

Gotta disagree with you SFP. Math comes easy to some people. There can be a natural logic to it. I was one of them. And I taught the subject as well.
