Saints-Pelicans owner Tom Benson is bringing Dixie Beer back to New Orleans with plans to build a local brewery after buying the 110-year-old iconic brand.

Tom and his wife Gayle Benson said Wednesday (July 26) that they purchased a majority of Dixie Brewing Co. LLC for an undisclosed price. Longtime owners Joseph and Kendra Bruno will keep a minority interest. As part of the agreement, a brewery will be built in Orleans Parish within the next two years, possibly in New Orleans East.

"Here's something that represents New Orleans for me," Tom Benson said Wednesday. "I think this is a good thing for New Orleans. This is why I wanted to get involved. I believe we need a little stimulus here in our city. We need something that's made here."

Starting Thursday, the first batch of Dixie Beer brewed under Benson's ownership will be rolled out to 250 bars and stores around New Orleans with expansion planned throughout Louisiana and into Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

It's sad they abandoned their old building and let it get taken over by the VA. Lot of squandered marketing potential, I thought.

That beer is no better than the cat piss Coors light. Just put the word Dixie on it and people will buy it tho.

I agree. Now if Benson can maybe bring back K&B's before he kicks the bucket, that would be great. I would not put it past him

Interesting timing, given the recent rise of the other big craft breweries that are inundating the market.

Found the beer snob.

Jesus Christ can't you people just enjoy a cold beer for what it is, a cold beer.

That's right, you people.

Seems to me, they missed an opportunity after Katrina to sort of reestablish themselves as an old established brand in a craft beer mold, centered around their old facility, with a dining/brewpub/beer garden component. Sort of like Anchor. Hard to see the Bensons pulling off anything like that, with a planned facility in da East.

I have to admire the old geezer - trying to buy/build things at his age. Hell, when I'm that old, I'm not buying green bananas.

Feel the same way. Great location and classic historical looking building. I would think it would have been on a registry somewhere. Is that why the facade was integrated into the VA?

Also, I approve of the Benson purchase and relocating back 'home'.
