First encounter: A young child knocks on my door last week and asks if I know the kid next door. Obviously I do, so I confirmed, acknowledged they were not home and asked his age. He's 6. I offer him a bottle of water because it was hot as shite (he was wearing uggs) and sent him on his way.

I get caught up to speed over the weekend from neighbors. New kids moved into the neighborhood a few weeks ago from Virginia.

Today I come home and he's standing in our yard as it's raining. I get inside and mention the kid. My kids take off out the back door and run around the side yard to look through the gate as I wasn't going to invite the kid in. Seems inappropriate as we haven't met the parents.

My daughter comes back in and lays this on us...

"His parents are working and his 8 year old brother watches him."

If that's actually true... Seems a little young for an 8 year old to watch a 6 year old. Not to mention I've seen the 6 year old out wandering the neighborhood by himself multiple times.

Should I stay out of it or call CPS for the kids safety?

Nah, Doesn't sound like the kid is being neglected. Might just be a temporary situation until school starts.

WTF man. CPS?

Talk with the kids parents and get a feel for them. Mention that you saw their kid outside several times (casually in passing) and that you were wondering if they the kid was out and about frequently (and in the rain).

Go from there. Handle it like an adult

This sounds like the beginning of a horror movie.

Talk to parents first. They may have a unique situation and more importantly temporary situation. I think 8 is too young myself, but given certain parameters it may be okay for others. I would be pissed if you called CPS on me based on assumptions and what your own kid says like that.

I thought the OT felt strongly about kids getting outside and playing

Now we want to call CPS on a kid hanging around the neighborhood?

You saw a kid wandering around the neighborhood, definitely call CPS and try to get them yanked out of there. Do some damage to the parents' lives.

8 is young to be supervising, but if they can afford to live in your neighborhood they're probably strapped and doing the best they can. Maybe politely mention it to the parents (most likely a single parent) that you've seen the 6 year old out by himself so the parent can figure out how to cage him up.

So a 6 year old boy knocks on your door wearing a pair of uggs?

Hey, if the lil fruit wants to stand outside in the middle of the rain.. He isn't hurting anyone. I'd maybe make an effort to go meet his parents first before up and calling child protective services. While I doubt he is lying.. there might be a chance he isn't giving the whole story.

Clyde,

Put the kid to work, but send him home five minutes before his parent(s) get home.

6&8 is too young to be by themselves. See if any other neighbors know the story and if in fact they are home alone all day I'd call cps

or he could talk to the parents first, like an adult.
