Three men hoping to find valuables in New York City's extensive sewer system were facing criminal charges for climbing through a manhole cover and spending several hours on a treasure hunt in the muck-filled caverns, authorities said on Friday.
quote:Not just the sewers, but the sewers of New York City. Ew.
The men had taken metal detectors with them into the sewer in the hopes of finding valuables flushed or dropped down toilets and drain pipes, the spokesman said.
They came up empty-handed, police said.
I'd love to have listened to the planning meeting that went on before they did this.

I'm willing to bet they weren't empty handed
It just wasn't valuables in their hands

Just the Ghostbusters checking out the river of slime flowing beneath the city......Now that they've been arrested no one will stand in the way of Vigo being reincarnated and taking over the world..............Thanks Obama!

I feel shitty that they got arrested for that crap. I'd imagine with some brown nosing and greased palms they'll come out smelling like roses. That is if no one makes a stink about this and they are able to flush it away. Everyone is allowed one dung mistake without being dragged through the mud!!

This happens all the time in NYC. There are miles of abandoned sewers, subway tunnels, started (but abandoned) subway expansions.
There's literally a whole world below Manhattan that most people don't know about. A couple of years ago there was an article called Mole People that described a whole society living in abandoned subway tunnels. Crazy stuff.

quote:
"There's a lot of mythology around the tunnels," agrees Singer. "New Yorkers say things like, 'They'll eat you down there. They eat rats. You'll be killed.' But I was 21, and that was right up my alley. The tunnels sounded great. I wanted to be homeless so badly." But the subterranean city Singer found when he entered an abandoned section of the subway, linking Penn Station in midtown to Harlem on the west side, was far from lawless. "Living on the street is very physical: if it rains you get wet, and you only have as much as you can carry. But in the tunnels, you can build yourself a house."
These houses were ramshackle constructions built out of scrap metal, bits of plastic, and furniture rescued from skips. Their residents were mostly men – runaways from abusive parents, divorcees, crack addicts. Grief and demons dogged them: Dee, a woman in her 50s, retreated into the darkness after an apartment fire killed her two children; Ralph was tormented by the knowledge that his five-year-old daughter had been raped and mutilated while he was serving a prison sentence. Here, amid the smell, the rats and the poor sanitation, they had carved out another existence – some for decades.

For punishment, they were sent back into the sewers for several hours.

Can we please use the accepted term "electronic archeologist" instead of "metal detectorist"? So demeaning.
