Thoughts on watching Horse Racing

We went out to Louisiana Downs today and had an enjoyable afternoon. It's a fun activity that I've always enjoyed but the event seems to be dying at that track, it's a shell of what I recall from twenty years ago. I've never attended races at any other track so I'd like to know how others feel about spending a day at the races.

La downs summer meet is really bad
95% of the good trainers and horses are gone, in chicago, kentucky, etc.
But i love the Winter/spring meet. Cashed my biggest tickets on La downs racing.
Good ole Larry Melancon made me a nice bankroll on occasions.

Horse racing is dying everywhere, unless you're in Kentucky or France

always a fun way to spend the day...never seem to think to do it, though.
I think the popularity is fading because people are worried about cruelty to the horses. that horse having to be euthanized on the track on live tv a few years back didn't help at all...

I place a few bets online nearly every day, but I haven't been to a track in years. LaD suffered when Texas racing was legalized. And Harrah's, the current owner, treats the racing product as an afterthought, all it cares about are the slots.
Racing is often its own worst enemy. People with a coherent marketing vision are few and far between, and the industry still has the mistaken belief that the horseman is the customer, and that the wagering public is an annoying afterthought.
There are a few bright spots. Southern California seems to be getting its act together, and Florida racing is drawing decent on-track crowds, based on the video I watch. And believe it or not, Evangeline and Delta seem to be holding their own in Louisiana.

Fairgrounds is under the Churchill Downs umbrella now.

The quality of racing at LaD has suffered. They offer far fewer races and lower purses than they did during their heyday. Even their signature race the super derby has become a joke. They desperately need to run an even shorter meet to increase their daily purses, which will attract some better horses. But that won't happen because of politics.
For the most part, horse racing in this country is being propped up by purse supplements from other forms of gambling at the racinos.

Went to the fair grounds a few years ago for my mom's bday and had a damn good time. Stayed out of the trashy casino part though
