Thoughts on little leaguers panhandling at major intersections?

i can maybe understand it in a small community where everyone knows everyone, etc...but the last three weekends there has been a little league football team panhandling at a very busy intersection near downtown Houston. Kids less that 10 years old standing on the corners holding their helmets out for people to drop change in while the deadbeat coach sits over in a lawn chair under a shade tree. No similar team shirts, no signs on who it is, no indication on what the money is actually even for!

Whatever happened to selling raffle tickets, magazine subscriptions, bbq lunches, candy bars?

Is this just a new norm where society wants free money with nothing in return and I'm just an old fart?

I literally look at them and say no. When I was that age I was selling candy bars or doing carwashes.

Give me something in return and I'll give you money.

The only ones who deserve money like that are disabled veterans and sick kids.

I never donate when they are begging but will buy something if they are selling it door to door or in front of a store. I think "giving" them money is definitely sending the wrong message.

That is sickening bullshite. At least do something like the kids on gameday selling candy bars. That's literally teaching the kids to ask for handouts instead of producing a good or performing a service. Pathetic.

Getting them to expect something for nothing is probably better preparation for their future than anything they'll learn in school.

I don't like it, and I also don't care for the Boy Scouts bothering me the second you walk out the door when leaving Lowes trying to get me to buy popcorn.

100% agree. I don't get it. Can you wash my car? Sell me something? Why are you teaching kids to be bums?

I've had past teams do mandatory bucket shaking at intersections before... Didn't show up and kid still played. I REFUSE to teach my kid to beg.

It's only a matter of time before one of these kids gets nailed by a vehicle. Not only are they wanting free money, but they're hanging out in the street at busy intersections.

And their "parent" lets them.

I won't give to them. I also won't buy anything from them. Now, if they are offering a service (car wash, mow my lawn etc) now we can talk.
