My high school had 1 valedictorian and 1 salutatorian. They went down to individual course averages if they had to.

Well, we can't have these kids not feeling like they're all super special!
Need to put off that whole "life is a competition" thing as long as possible. Many of these kids are going to have a bigass wakeup call when they get to college and they're suddenly not coasting to straight A's...they are valedictorians after all. But that's when they have their parents call the professor to complain.

I saw this on the news the other day, they say its to help boost the resumes of the kids so that they can have an easier time getting into college. But, I'm sure it back fires when the colleges begin to put "Valedictorian ____ of ____" then the jig is up.
