This 1937 video perfectly explains rear differentials. (car rear ends)

Of course this is not for everybody.

Popular Mechanics Link

This is a 1937 Chevrolet product video, really to tout their new rear drive platforms. Though the first eight minutes breaks down exactly what a rear differential is, and how they were first engineered.

You can skip the motorcycle stunts of the first minute and a half..

I like tinkering with cars, and have changed gears, but could never fully explain the function like this.

It's pretty simple until you get into how limited slips work

just got finished taking those 411's out of my Mustang and putting the factory ones back in.
Got sick of not being able to shim them right. Tried 4 times and they were still loud. I've done them before in other cars and it's always turned out great.

don't know.

CV joints are pretty cool too. (what all FWD cars have)

LSD rears are really a lot more complicated.

My older brother made a differential out of tinker-toys back in the mid-forties when I was about 8 yrs old. The second step in the video looked exactly how I remember it.

I was fascinated - most technical thing I had ever witnessed. I have often thought of that moment.

Thanks for resurrecting one of my favorite memories of my brother.
