Thinking about switching from PETE to ME

Anyone here also done the same thing? The way oil prices are going, I'd like to have a career that couldn't be at back because of wars in foreign countries. ME gives more career flexibility. Am I right in this line of thinking? Am I also right for assuming that a decent gpa in ME would set me up for more desirable locations for my first job?

Do it. Petroleum will run out but mechanicals are forever

The PETE field is definitely getting flooded with new grads so a change would work in your favor. The discipline to switch to depends on your interest.
If your wanting to work in plants, go chemical eng. You can work in chemical or oil in gas field with it.

Like maybe NOLA or Houston as opposed to possibly spending weeks-months at a time in Saudi Arabia.

Go bioengineering. Stop chasing the present and take a shortcut to the future.

Houston is definitely the petroleum hub. I don't know anyone I graduated with who went to Saudi Arabia, except for the Saudi Arabian students.
Honestly, the way prices are going, and considering how popular the major has become, you tried to get in at a bad time. The safe option would be to switch to mechanical, and take petroleum classes as your electives. That way you could still possibly get a petroleum engineering job but you wouldn't be pigeonholed to the oilfield.

You must be a freshman if this what you think your future career path is in PETE.

NOLA is really sparse on petroleum engineering jobs these days.

I actually was very interested in pete and still find the oilfield fascinating...however, I just couldn't stomach the insecurity of the discipline and switched to ME...
damn glad I did, because within a few years after I graduated, the job market went from 100% placement of graduates to serious consideration of eliminating the PetE major at LSU...
damn glad I switched to ME and have never regretted it for a minute....

I'm a Pete, graduated 2009. They are both great majors, don't think you would regret the switch.
