The June 2016 edition of Fleet Reserve Association had an article about the USS Liberty, the most decorated ship in US Navy history for a single action.

quote:

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship. At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.

Wiki

quote:

Twenty-six years have passed since that clear day on June 8, 1967 when Israel attacked the USS Liberty with aircraft and torpedo boats, killing 34 young men and wounding 171. The attack in international waters followed over nine hours of close surveillance. Israeli pilots circled the ship at low level 13 times on eight different occasions before attacking. Radio operators in Spain, Lebanon, Germany and aboard the ship itself all heard the pilots reporting to their headquarters that this was an American ship. They attacked anyway. And when the ship failed to sink, the Israeli government concocted an elaborate story to cover the crime.

Washington Report

"On June 8, 2005 the USS Liberty Veterans Association submitted A Report of War Crimes Committed Against the USS Liberty, June 8, 1967 to the Department of Defense in accordance with the DoD Law of War Program.

The War Crimes Report we filed lists allegations of acts committed during the attack on our ship, including:

The jamming of our radios on both US Navy tactical and international maritime distress frequencies;
The use of unmarked aircraft by the forces attacking the USS Liberty;
The deliberate machine gunning of life rafts we had dropped over the side in anticipation of abandoning ship; and
The recall of two flights of rescue aircraft that had been launched from Sixth Fleet aircraft carriers.

After those flights were recalled, Sixth Fleet personnel listened to our calls for help as the attack continued knowing they were forbidden to come to our assistance.

The Department of Defense has unilaterally waived its obligation under the Department of Defense Law of War Program by refusing to investigate the allegations contained in the War Crimes Report. The Department of Defense has also refused to provide a speaker to address the crew of the USS Liberty and explain their actions with regard to the War Crimes Report."

USS Liberty Veterans Association

quote:

When President Johnson learned that the USS America and USS Saratoga had launched warplanes to do battle with the forces attacking the Liberty, he told Defense Secretary Robert McNamara to call Sixth Fleet commander Rear Admiral Lawrence Geiss and tell him to order the warplanes to return immediately to their carriers.

IF AMERICANS KNEW

quote:

Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship. Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity, though others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.

In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 (US$22.6 million 2016) in compensation to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the final U.S. bill of $17,132,709 for material damage to Liberty herself plus 13 years' interest.

Just sharing. Not making any judgements myself. Having been to Israel, and having been warmly treated by Israelis of all ages and walks of life, I can say the average Israeli is appreciative of Americans and what the USA means to their existence.

It's a pretty odd incident that the American media doesn't want to talk about.

It's 49 year old news, they aren't covering the Tet offensive anymore either. It was reported at the time but was overshadowed by a war in which Israel was fighting for its survival. And since then there has been a lot of disinformation and propaganda from both the pro and anti Israel sides.

Why would the media be talking about this when they are busy doing a stellar job covering the pressing issues facing this nation now?

It's not old news at all. The US government allowed a foreign government to commit war crimes during the attack on the USS Liberty with impunity.

With the US in a de facto constant state of war for decades and with the oft-repeated claim from Members of Congress of how much they honor and support the Military/Veteran community the question of what other countries will be allowed to commit war crimes against the United States with impunity is definitely on the table and timely.

Even if absolutely true on all counts - it happened nearly 50 years ago. Nobody involved then in a decision-making capacity is alive today, which makes this statement

completely baseless. Whatever you may think of the current Congress, the very oldest of them were far more concerned about chasing girls in 1967 than about Israel. The younger ones hadn't been born.
