I would have no problem with this if the onion didn't backtrack and delete their tweet

OK here's what happened. A reporter called her 'Annie,' which was kind of patronizing. The girl confidently responded, my name isn't Annie, it's Quvenzhane. That's what the Onion tweet came in response to, as a joke obviously.

They apologized
quote:

Dear Readers,

On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive—not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.

No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.

The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.

In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.

Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.

Sincerely,
Steve Hannah
CEO The Onion

I respect her for owning up to her name and being proud of it. (She's young and her acting was really good for a five-seven year old <film took forever to set up and film I guess?--9 now??>)

But what were her parents thinking? What is up with having these 'unique' names?

i find it laughable at all the outrage over a word, and how using it in relation to a woman is so derogatory.

a word is a word. you choose whether it has any loaded meaning behind it...good or bad.

as for the onion tweet - the only people who were offended or outraged are typically the people looking for something to complain about. the rest of the sensable populace realize it was a joke and took it as such.

like george Carlin said - you can joke about anything at all, the people that get offended are the ones that want to be offended.

I get that they felt the need to apologize to her, but why did they apologize to the Academy as well?

With a name like Quvenzhane, clearly its her parents who are the cunts.

example: the people on twitter claiming the onion would have never tweeted that if it was Dakota Fanning (Re: a white girl)

My rule on humor is nothing is off-limits if it's funny.

The Onion tweet wasn't funny.

A big who gives a frick on that one, though. And honestly, the story probably brought more attention to them. Makes no sense to apologize to them.

Do the people all up in arms about this know what The Onion is? Have they ever read an Onion newspaper?

I ask this because I really don't think they have.
