The Nest Learning Thermostat?
Posted by CMBears1259 on 7/20/14 at 9:06 pm00
Anybody have experience with it? The Mrs. & I are looking to upgrade the thermostat and she keeps talking about this thing. I did a little (very little so far) research on it and she read some deets off of the website to me, but it almost sounds creepy to me how much shite it can supposedly learn about household/ AC usage habits!
Also our AC unit is about 15-20 years old (we've been in the house going on about 3 years), but still in good shape. That said, would this gizmo be too technologically advanced to be compatible with our AC unit?
TIA

Do a search. Several threads on it.
I have and I like it. I used level billing and I have noticed my bill creeping down each month.
Their website has a guide to help you determine if it will work with your unit.

If you can afford it get it, skynet will take over eventually, might as well reap some benefits before they do.

The nest is one of the best purchases I have made in a while. Highly recommend. A neat piece of technology.

What is creepy about this exactly? Pretty much everyone knows you aren't at home between 9 and 5 already. And why worry about whether you like it at 70 instead of 72?

I have it and love it. It's great that it learns your habits and adjusts based on if someone is home or not.
You need to take your current thermostat off, take a pic of the wiring, and then go to they're website and see if the nest is compatible with your wiring.

this is actually one of my questions...my thermostat is in a hall that no one uses even if I am home. how will it work if it thinks no one is ever home?...

Long period of inactivity will trigger auto away mode. You can set schedules to adjust to certain temps so that you don't have to physically go to the thermostat. Its awesome
It has a motion sensor. It won't "learn" nearly as well if your thermostat is in a secluded area.
The best feature is the ability to adjust it remotely- from your couch, vacation, etc. That's the greatest savings- when you leave town for a week and forget to raise the thermostat.
Programming is very easy with the GUI. Much better than the button menus on most devices.
My one complaint is that it always reads a couple of degrees higher than it actually is. Mine will say 77 when it's 75. No big deal, but it's a tough concept for XX's and they'll always want to turn it lower. Just don't let your wife know that there's a mobile app and you'll be fine.
