I met you in the rain on the last day of 1972...

I don't even care if this is real or fake. This is beautiful.

If I really wanted to drill down, there are a couple of things that don't quite add up, but it is beautifully written, and I hope it is true.

Guess it was hard back then to ask for a number.

If she was really engaged to someone from a Boston society family, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to track her down, because there just aren't that many of those folks. I'll bet a decent private investigator could do it within a week.

It's funny though, this little event may have had much more significance for him than it did for her. She may not remember it, or him.

If someone wanted to get picky - I didn't think it would be possible for someone to go from active in theater pilot flying combat missions to home in Boston discharged one week later. Maybe a military guy can comment on this.

I'm not an expert on Vietnam era USAF operations, but 4 B52 sorties in a week's time sounds like a lot. And being sent directly home doesn't ring true. That's what they did with draftees, but a commissioned officer would probably have gone on to his next assignment. Then the lady was wearing a strapless dress, outdoors, on New Year's Eve. In Boston.

But, like I said, I hope it's true, and they find each other again.

a quick google search says it was 24 degrees, and no reports of rain that day?

LINK

edit:
but that's still some damn fine writing.

That actually brought tears to my eyes. I hope it's true. I'm going to believe it's true.

This is what bothers me. I split time between Boston and NYC for the whole year last year and guarantee you that no way someone is not wearing a heavy jacket in January. Hell, no one is not wearing a heavy jacket in November.
