So, what if you're a salesman who prides himself on being as trustworthy and honest as possible. Granted the rest of the industry doesn't help the case. But there are good people out there in every "slimey" profession.

Are you saying that "sales" is an "industry". It's a profession of sorts, I'll grant you but it's not an industry. An industry produces something to fill a need or desire for the betterment of society. What a salesman does is profit off the efforts of others who produced that good or service.

All morally-sound work done well by professionals is honorable and worthy of respect.
Some professions are due more respect only because they are more difficult, require more personal sacrifice or are more dangerous but there is a floor where many crafts/trades are just as respectable as many others.
