the asians do it and they're killing it compared to the rest of us.

Even though the recession officially ended seven years ago, a housing trend seen during the downturn has endured: The number of multigenerational homes continues to grow.

A record 60.6 million people, or 19 percent of the American population, lived with multiple generations under one roof in 2014, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of federal census data. That compares with 17 percent in 2009, the year the recession ended, and 18 percent three years later, in 2012.

Pew defines a multigenerational household as one that includes two or more adult generations — say, baby boomer parents and their adult children — or one that includes grandparents and grandchildren.

quote:

John L. Graham, professor emeritus at the business school at the University of California, Irvine, and co-author of “All in the Family: A Practical Guide to Successful Multigenerational Living,” said he saw the trend as part of a return to interdependence within the extended family. “This is the way people have always lived around the world,” he said.

I wouldn't mind it as long as everyone is contributing.

I get mad when I find one of my hairs on the soap. I'd be super pissed knowing it could be my grandmothers.

As long as the younguns are paying rent or picking up some of the bills it makes a lot more sense. Pay rent to someone in the family instead of an outsider. And you aren't duplicating utility bills.

There’s nothing “wrong” with it. It’s a cultural and generational thing.

Things change and changes generally reflect the times surrounding them. It may shift that way but I wouldn’t say it’s good or bad.

Edit: as long as everyone’s contributing of course

It depends the reason.

If you just finished grad school at Harvard and are in the middle of an internship, then no problem.

If you are back at home because you're pregnant at 17 and your baby daddy got arrested for Cocaine, then its a problem.

If you dropped out of college because of bad grades and moved back home temporarily, then..........ok for now.

a lot of people on here will disagree, but i have a hard time coming up with a sound, objective argument against it.

I think it’s a great way to lessen the burdens of everyone in the household. For young adults it’s a good way to get a start out into the world. For parents, you get free in-house baby sitting. For seniors you get companionship from close relatives. It’s a win-win as long as the arrangement isn’t dysfunctional or a codependency.

GLT says repeatedly these threads aren't about him.

Anyway, I'm betting this is how humans always lived until like the last 40 years or so. Now, we've been brainwashed to believe you're a loser and out of touch with society if you don't go into debt up to your eyeballs for your own place. That itself is a kind of madness.

I'd say roughly 40% or more of these households become this way over time.

Listen, this isn't even limited to family-it might be somebody from the village or a recent immigrant or a kid studying at a local school. Also, lets say your kid has a good job and lives with his parents until he's 28. He's paid off all his debt and banked six figures on top and has a nest egg to go out into the world with. If there is harmony in the family-why not? I say this as a guy who did not spend a single night at my home after the Summer of my senior year in HS and who married into an Asian family. The Asian way is the better way (provided there is family harmony).

Probably. Many people aren’t great at setting healthy boundaries.

it really is.

with the growing underclass and shrinking middle class, i can see people rejecting what you described. why have two or three generations living in (separate) shitty houses or apartments while barely scraping by? they can probably afford a decent place in a nice neighborhood if they combine their incomes.
