A 19 year old spends 90 days in jail and will be labeled as a sex offender for 25 years for having sex with a 14 year old who lied and said she was 17. Meanwhile you have countless cases of female teachers sleeping with students and they spend zero days in jail and are not labeled as sex offenders. Why isn't there any consistency in these types of cases?

quote:

When Les and Amanda Anderson went to pick up their son from a county jail in St. Joseph, Michigan, it was the first time they had seen him in two and half months. “I was thinking just coming up here it’s like he shouldn’t be here,” Les Anderson said. “This, you know, it shouldn’t be happening.” Since his release last month, their son Zach Anderson’s freedom has been severely restricted because at just 19 years old, Zach is a convicted sex offender. Zach was arrested last winter after having sex with a girl he met on the dating app “Hot or Not,” who claimed she was 17. But she admitted to police that was a lie. She was really 14. If he had known she was so young, Zach said, he never would have met her. “I wouldn't even have gone to her house, like I literally wouldn't have gone to her house at all,” he said. As a convicted sex offender, the terms of Zach’s probation are incredibly strict. For the next five years, he is forbidden from owning a smart phone or using the Internet. He is not allowed to talk to anyone under age 17, other than immediate family. He is banned from going to any establishment that serves alcohol and he has to be home before 8 p.m. every night.

Zach was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. After admitting that she had lied about her age, the now 15-year-old and her mother even testified on Zach’s behalf at his trial.

According to court documents, the girl’s mother told the judge, “I don’t want him to be a sex offender because he really is not.” Her daughter added, “I feel nothing should happen to Zach.”

But the judge condemned what he called a culture of “meet, hook-up, have sex, sayonara, totally inappropriate behavior,” according to court documents.

Yeesh, that is pretty fricked up on the part of the judge.

Although I fully understand the need to protect anyone from "sex crimes", and do not have the answer on how to do this better, I think we definitely have the witch hunt mentality when it comes to young men and their sexual interactions with young women.

I know their is a blurry line and many cases are legitimate and require the law to step in. But we are arresting young men based off the mistakes of the women sometimes and it's a shame. Girl can lie about her age and incriminate the guy, but there is no fault on her, guy can get jail time. Girl can change her mind that it wasn't consensual, guy can get jail time. It's her word vs. his, and that's all the courts need now.

Like I said, I don't know how to fix it, because I fully understand the need to prosecute those who commit actual crimes. I understand you have to be strict. But we're taking a lot of "innocent" people down to protect our little princesses.

Michigan state Sen. Rick Jones, who helped write the state’s sex offender registry law, says Zach should have been more careful.

“As you grow up, I mean young men are told you know in high school, 15 is jailbait,” Jones said. “Now that’s a slang term, but that’s what young men are told … I would hope that somebody who was 19 years old would say ‘Well do you have a driver's license or something? You don’t appear to be the appropriate age.’”

What a fricking prick.

with any woman

sexual crimes against women is the one crime in which the male is always guilty until proven innocent, instead of innocent until proven guilty

and to make it even more backwards, it is upon the male to prove that he is innocent, instead of the female proving that he is guilty

It's not the only, but it's probably the most prominent. I've read a few articles recently on child abuse that made me sick. Parents getting jail time when they took their kid in after a fall, or some other accident. Doctor said it looked like abuse, child protective services stepped in, and they were convicted. Passed lie detector tests and everything, but that's not admissible in court. Even had other doctor's testimony that wasn't allowed. When it comes to protecting our women and children, the law can get a little overzealous.

It's not just heterosexual people on the SRO. I know a gay man on the list.

It's not all cut and dried. I think laws need to be changed to deal with each case individually, not just lump everyone together as a sex offender.

As far as the person I know, the reason he is on the list sounds worse than it is. I know the person and I know he isn't what "they" think. It involved someone being at his apartment and using his computer and clicking on improper things.

I witnessed firsthand all of the BS he has to go through. Moral of the story is don't let anyone use your internet that you don't know very well and trust even more than you know them. They will get off scott free and you could be in a world of legal trouble.

That's absurd and disgusting that you would say that. Being gay is not a crime. Bigotry like yours is what's keeping this country in the dark ages.

I never said being gay was a crime.

People assume that people on the list are for crimes against minors or children and straight.

I am hardly a bigot. I was telling the story of what happened to the person I know. The gay men (and women) that I know are also the most harmless people I know and not what you'd EVER expect to find on a Sex Offender Registry.

Never ASSuME.

C'est tout.

What's the deal with not being able to live near a boat launch...?

Is it considered a public park...?

Yeah...as an equalist/"feminist", I think it's BS. I was reading an AskReddit thread last night about men who were sexually assaulted and almost every single time, the girl just got away with no punishment like it was nothing. It really is sickening.

If you interact with someone sexually against their will, you're a rapist and should face the consequences. Period.
