Judge says FBI can hack your computer with no warrant.

quote:

The FBI did not need a warrant to hack a US citizen's computer, according to a ruling handed down on Tuesday by Senior US District Court Judge Henry Coke Morgan, Jr. If the decision is upheld, it may have ripple effects that essentially allow government agencies to remotely search and seize information from any computer in the US without a warrant, probable cause or suspicion, the EFF argues.

quote:

"Generally, one has no reasonable expectation of privacy in an IP address when using the internet," Morgan, Jr. said. "Even an internet user who employs the Tor network in an attempt to mask his or her IP address lacks a reasonable expectation of privacy in his or her IP address."

quote:

Basically, Morgan Jr. argued, computers are hacked every day and no one should expect privacy while operating online.

As long as it's not rebellious young Muslims trying to buy body armor. That is profiling and PC is the most important thing in America

Possible Tax evasion of productive citizens is a full go though

Thinking about this further, this is incredibly dumb.

It's akin to a house in a bad neighborhood getting robbed, then having the police legally come in without a warrant because there's no reasonable expectation the house won't get robbed again.

Unfortunately, both sides of the aisle are on a constant hunt for ways to take away people's constitutional rights whether it's more gun gontrol or the Patriot Act

This is just dumb.

You might as well say that "generally, a person has no reasonable expectation of privacy when living among other people........even if one builds a house and locks the doors......"

Not that it will matter to the OT but there is a bit more to this when you read the article. They seized, with a warrant, a server running a child porn site. They then continued running the server and captured all the IP addresses coming in. Then went after the owners of the IP addresses. It's on the edge of not being acceptable but not as if they are sitting around Quantico just made hacking everyone's laptops.

This is the same as when the cops take down a known drug house and then set up inside and grab people as they show up on the doorstep. I technically think it is overreach but we all know damn well why people are coming to that house.

If you have security cams, they will now be spying on suspects via that. You can bet your arse on it.

Do you even incognito mode? Nothing is more secret than that.

Most judges are pretty technically illiterate. If nothing else it insulates him from cases like this.

There can be no reaction. He said that anyone on the internet is fair game. This would include him, the FBI, Obama, DHS and anyone else that uses the internet. This judge just OK'ed all hacking.

This.

If you think your searches and browsing history aren't fair game you're crazy.

Now, in court? Can that activity be used against you? No, I don't think so, but to track you? Sure. Especially when national security can be argued.
