It has to do with principles of biology and evolution. Males have a biological interest in having as many children with as many women as possible. This is because many of the offspring were likely to die and the male was not required to care for or raise all of them. This could be done by extended family.
Women have a biological interest in having as many fit, viable children as possible. Ideally, the strongest father sires the child and the best provider raises it.
These are just truths that are hardwired into your brain by evolution. It's the same reason snakes give people the willies.
Then, we superimposed modern society, several different types of economies, and technology on top of the wetware in your skull. It doesn't have moralistic answers; it is simply biology running up against the modern world.
Most men today want to have lots of sex but not have lots of children. This is a paradox.
Most men today know that women who sleep with a lot of men are not pregnant by them, but are still wary of committing to them. Your genius, modern brain suspects that she might be carrying someone else's child and influences you to place a low social value on her.

As some have already said, it's biology. Parental investment for one.
But as far as the double standard goes...if a woman is pregnant and carries a baby to term, you KNOW she is the mother. Could you be 100% certain that you are the father (without DNA testing)? Part of male genetic insecurities, if you will. That's why it's always polite to comment on a newborn looking like the father.

Girls are more critical of girls than guys. I've been with some scandalous chicks in my day. Even dated one where I was the documented 50th dude she'd fricked (she wrote them all down). Doesn't matter to me how much of a hooker a chick is as long as I get mine and she isn't fricking around.
Maybe a LLOT can say, but idk if girls talk about how many guys they actually frick like guys do.
