My family and I were out of town this past week, and I got a call from my neighbor telling me there was a crew from DPW tearing up my front yard with a trackhoe. Apparently the guy that lives across the street has been having some huge problems with sewer backups and the main goes in my yard between the sidewalk and the street. The city busted up my front walk out to the mailbox and fricked up a bunch of my sod. They replaced the walk with some limestone but the grass is now pretty much just dirt with tire tracks all over it. How long do they usually take to come fix everything back permanently? Also, do they fix it back comparable to the way it was before, or am I gonna be left holding the bag here?

I am pretty sure they can do what they want with the land between the sidewalk and the street so you are probably shite out of luck.

Might as well assume this.

If nothing happens soon, call the streets department. If nothing happens or they can't give you any info, contact your councilman.

Yes they will do something in attempt to bring the not-your property back to a good enough state.

They'll fix it, but it ain't your yard. The price of having running water, power, ect ....

Well yes and no. FWIW. It can be your property and the City Parish has a servitude on it which means it is "yours" but they can access and modify it at will.

Yes. Make sure you ask for sod (vs grass seed).

They may or may not come back and toss some cheap sod with 3-5" spacing between but I can almost guarantee that it will be far from what you would consider a complete job. Honestly, it's probably not worth your time to complain about it. I would call only if they do nothing but if they show up and make an effort, you may just have to wait it out until a few cuts and edging can clean it back up.

...and it ain't "MY YARD"... it's the public right-of-way

so what would you rather... torn up grass or sewer back-up?

Usually it's considered r.o.w. But in an election year, a councilman will bend over backwards.
