It's not like we shoot it into space after we use it... You don't get to enjoy a low humidity climate without expecting that same climate will result in droughts from time to time.

I'm tired of this being considered a crisis like it's the first time in human history a desert-like environment lacked moisture.

California is a never ending crisis, either drough or fires or too much rain and mudslides, why don't they build some reservoirs if they want to keep adding to the population!

well there is only the colorado river in the south. 7 states share that river

they need a pipeline from up north and some giant reservoirs

Have an aunt from Cali who was visiting the other week. Was washing some dishes, and she was appalled that I let the water run the entire time I was washing. Told her it sucked they had water shortages because we got plenty of the stuff.

Awesome story, I know.

The irony is many southern Californians would be the first to protest the construction of anything that could help their situation.

Why do they not farm more in areas with more rain? Like la, ms, al? I am sure there is a logical reason but the show didn't mention it

It's only 2016. Why aren't they de-salinating sea water using today's technology.

No doubt they would come up with some environmental damage excuse not to do it.

Sprawling, growing cities placing more demand on strained public infrastructure and what not....It's not a new problem. It's just unusual that people are buying the government's excuse for their own failures now.

quote:

The restrictions, under which cities and towns in the state were told to cut water use by 25 percent, could be the first step in what many researchers and analysts say is a fundamental change in the way California uses its diminishing water supplies.

It's happening in Atlanta to some degree as well, and they get plenty of rain. Large cities tend to spring up where they are economically feasible, not where it makes sense geographically. I'd also argue that New Orleans and most of the gulf coast have similar conflicts with climate and geography....but they exist because cities had to be there.

I love the OT;

"The California water shortage..I mean water isn't a finite resource"

LINK /

'Freshwater makes up a very small fraction of all water on the planet. While nearly 70 percent of the world is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is fresh. The rest is saline and ocean-based. Even then, just 1 percent of our freshwater is easily accessible, with much of it trapped in glaciers and snowfields. In essence, only 0.007 percent of the planet's water is available to fuel and feed its 6.8 billion people.'

There is no such thing as a finite natural resource. We have more of just about anything that we want than we've ever had at any point in time. If there is danger of losing a finite natural resource (wild fish, for example) we will adapt and correct and have more wild fish than ever before within a generation.

When people say this, I envision some guy sitting in all camo with a shotgun and a bible who is about to field dress a deer. California undoubtedly has its issues, but saying it sucks is completely inaccurate. It's probably the most diverse state as far as scenery and climate go. Big Sur is awesome. San Diego is awesome. LA is meh. San Fran is awesome but$$$ and, NorCal is some of the most beautiful country i've ever seen.

you can certainly consume faster than it replenishes though

how is this even a discussion?
