Can you randomly light something on fire in a public place?

This is a good question. If I went to a public place with people all around and I set a North Korean flag on fire, I am sure I would be warned not to start a fire like that again. I am sure if you set fire to something in public, there is something that they can arrest you on.. Maybe not?

Either way, not having read what exactly they made illegal. If I am in my own yard and I set fire to an American flag, there is no way they could arrest me specifically for burning the American flag. They could arrest me for burning something in a no burn area, but would it even be legal for them to make me pay a fine based on the fact it was the American flag I was burning?

The parish will lose in court but they can still arrest someone, hold them for several hours, and generally frick up their day.

And that's when the federal civil rights lawsuit gets filed and the parish pays a judgment and looks foolish.

This.

The councilman who proposed this will likely run for parish president. His district is mainly in north iberville, but years ago his district was gerrymandered to the point where there is a very thin part that reached down to an area in which.. I guess maybe a quarter of that population is included in his district.

Since he represents the north part of the parish, the majority of the voters are not really familiar with him. But all of a sudden, this story gets him in the news.. And the majority of the people who are paying attention will not once question whether they are able to do it or not, they will be 100% for this.

For the other councilmen, no one is going to vote against it, because it will hurt them more than help them. Even if they know that this is something that local government can't really do, people will still pay attention to see who voted for it and it would end up hurting them politically, but after seeing the councilman who proposed this and what's going on. I can pretty much assure you this is just a stunt for this guy to get people more familiar with who he is.

But there's a lot of flag burners with too many freedoms and they just want to make it easier for policemen to shoot em

didn't the supreme court rule years ago that flag burning was protected under the 1st amendment? If so, not sure how a parish government thinks they can write laws that are unconstitutional.

I always assume these people who are triggered the most never served in the military. Bc in the military they tell us we are serving to protect the rights of those who oppose us to be free to speak their opposition!!!

I find that to be the case as well. The two guys they quoted (as vets) in the article seemed to be quite triggered.

Lets say its July 4th in Iberville Parish and I'm baking a festive American Flag cake, I do a bunch of really high quality local meth and forget its in the oven and burn it. Have I committed a crime?

No problem with allowing a piece of shite to burn the flag if that is what they choose to do.

Since people always want new laws, a new law should be enacted. If person A assaults person B, while person B is burning an American flag, the penalty shall be $1.00.
