quote:

Every test group needs a control. That way any divergence from the standard can be detected and examined. For luxury sport sedans, that’s the BMW 3-Series. Ask virtually any car critic at a reputable publication, and they’ll agree. There’s a reason one of every four BMWs sold is a 3-Series—94,527 in North America alone last year.

quote:

BMW’s 2016 340i is a good example of why. The $45,800 sedan has a confident and surefooted suspension balanced by a light-on-its-feet steering and six-speed transmission. (That “i” used to stand for fuel-injected. Now it differentiates between engine and power variants.) Its 3.0-liter turbocharged engine has such a healthy appetite for the road that it resembles a young pup in the middle of a growth spurt—the blooming beast eats everything in sight. And it’s wrapped in a body that looks balanced across its shoulders, masculine across the front kidney grille, and as appropriate for showing up to a business meeting as it is for retrieving a first date. Audi, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz and, in its own way, Porsche, have been gunning for this top spot for years.
And they’ve produced very good things, including the capable Mercedes C Class—a jewel of a car—the fresh, progressive Audi A4 sedan, and a four-door version of the Cadillac ATS-V that has made massive strides forward for the Detroit brand.

quote:

If and when you do buy the 340i, the six-speed manual is the way to go. (The eight-speed sport automatic comes standard; all-wheel-drive and manual gearbox cost extra.) You’ll find its precise gearbox gets a full 30 mpg on the highway; it’ll hit 60mph in 5.4 seconds. Those figures beat the $38,950 Mercedes C300 (34 mpg; 6.2 seconds) and $45,900 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI (33 mpg; 6.1 seconds) for speed but not efficiency. Pick your poison.

3 series sucks. 5 series is the standard-bearer.

I'd be willing to say this about a 328i. But the 335 & 340 are in completely different leagues.

Then again, this place loves to shite on BMW owners and likes to glorify F250 baws. So it isn't too surprising.

When I was car shopping, it was after having a 3 series totaled in an accident. I wanted to explore a little so I test drove an Audi A4. I didn't like it because it wasn't a BMW. I'm not going to act high and mighty about it, but for me I just love how they drive. I am not a car aficionado--I just like what I like.

God damn, you beat me to it. How any motherfricker rants and raves about these is beyond me.

*No brag* I recently brought my wife a 320i. I am not impressed. It is the size of a ford focus, but she likes it or rather yet the idea of driving a BMW.

Shh. This is OT snobbery at its best. I drive an A6, and mainly because I have kids and wanted a bigger sedan but I would drive a 340i or M3 sedan in a heartbeat.

as much as this place shits on it, the 3 has been, and still is, a remarkable model of power, handling, balance and ride. they really are well built cars and have been since that first E30 model.

always go back to what clarkson said about the M3 and its competitors (C class AMG, Audi RS, Lexus whatever the hell the call it now) in that they are all fantastic cars but they are all modeled after the best which was that M.

only problem is that most BMW owners are cocks.

top gear episode

Nothing wrong with that. Plus, I bet that BMW held up well in that accident.

BMW's 5 Series would match the OP's thread title much better, IMO.
