On the one-month anniversary of the day Baton Rouge police fatally shot Alton Sterling outside a north Baton Rouge convenience store, about 100 people gathered in the Triple S parking lot to celebrate Sterling's life and urge people to continue pushing for justice in the case.

Sterling, a felon in possession of a firearm, was fatally shot by a Baton Rouge police officer during a struggle outside the store early July 5. Videos of the incident have circulated widely online. The shooting, which is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice, sparked protests at Triple S, Baton Rouge police headquarters and across the country.

Some of those attending Friday's memorial wore shirts that read "Black Lives Matter" and others carried flags saying "Justice for Alton."

In the past month, the convenience store has become something of a community gathering place, with people regularly coming to remember Sterling, who often sold CDs in the parking lot. People driving past the event Friday night waved from their vehicles and honked their horns in support.

Sandra Sterling, the aunt of Alton Sterling, said people must stand up and fight for justice for her nephew. She noted that protests were halted out of respect after the July 17 shooting that killed three law enforcement officers and injured three others, but "now it's time to get back out here."

Gavin Long, a Missouri man, shot dead Baton Rouge officers Montrell Jackson and Matthew Gerald and Sheriff's deputy Brad Garafola and seriously injured deputy Nick Tullier, who remains hospitalized, before being fatally shot by law enforcement.

"It's been one month, one month since Alton was laid right here," Sandra Sterling said, becoming emotional as she pointed at the place where her nephew was shot and died. "Right here. Killed. Killed. Murdered. Murdered. Dead, never coming back again."

Political and community leaders speaking at the event encouraged attendees to continue protesting, but urged them to remain peaceful and not lose sight of their goal.

"Justice looks like they should be doing an indictment in somebody for his death. And if we don't get that, we can't stop at that," state Rep. C. Denise Marcelle said.

Yes, there should be justice.

For the two cops whose lives have been in limbo for a month.

Justice will be served when the announcement is made that Alton's killing was justified and they release his toxicology report. This cannot happen soon enough.

When justice comes, they'll want something else. All they do is demand shite from decent people.

These people are so bored. Just the fact that they still go "raise awareness" at the store is pathetic. I gaurantee you when they are out there (probably in the middle of the day when most people are working), they aren't even talking about Sterling. They are probably joking and laughing as the normally would at that time of day, in front of that store.

Also, Marcelle's quote made no sense at all. She's fricking awful.

It's because he fought that he got killed.

I'm betting my house that when they toxicology reports do come out, it'll say he was on drugs or some shite. But that'll be ignored.

How many people really go to that shite? Or do they go and use it as a reason to be animals?

Last year maybe a hundred at it's biggest point.

The worst part, is that the majority will be White SJW's. Out there screaming at the cops and having signs that make them look like serious dildos

What's funny is how they keep wanting "justice for Alton". He doesn't need justice. He was a felon in possession of a firearm who fought with police. He fricked up.

I can totally understand people protesting for justice, just not for Alton... or Michael Brown. Both were dumb asses who fought police and got shot. I've never been shot by police. I've never fought them either. I once got punched in the face by a cop at Mardi Gras. But I took it and shut the frick up so it didn't get worse.

Denise Marcelle makes me sick. I pray to God she isn't our next mayor.

I told the wife that before we head out to a family members house for a party, i feel we should stop by Canfield(Michael browns apartments) and pay respects for the hard working young man, who was ready to start college and rudely shot by a Police Officer, by pouring an OE near the memorial. Respect

I have to say I'm surprised The Advocate included the part about Sterling being "a felon in possession of a firearm"
