As we all know, the OT can be quite ridiculous at times, filled with questionable morality and ludicrous contradictions on many a topic.

However, the OT also has a breadth of knowledge that can be tapped with nothing more than a few keystrokes. I want to give a shout out to those helping others on here, and in my case in particular, meauxjeaux2 and brew400. Y'all were spot on with my AC diagnostic and helped me save $600 by doing a simple circuit board swap myself instead of getting raped by some AC tech... again.

Keep up the occasional good work in the cesspool that is the OT everyone!

My bad, I certainly should have known better.

the more i've learned to DIY the less hatred i have towards HVAC, appliance repairmen and electricians.

i repair my own HVAC, do minor electrical and appliances and more often than not, there's some 'gotcha' in the process that ends up taking 3-4x as long as i anticipated.

those guys have to earn a living too and I don't begrudge them charging what they do to drive out to your house and fix the problem quickly.

I completely understand this. But it wasn't a quick fix. It was three days later when he could get the part. It was $50 for me to overnight it on Amazon and changed it in 5 minutes. Total drive time, time in attic, plus time to install the part, I could see him charging me for two hours or so. Add a markup on the part, I'd have been completely fine with paying him around $300 if it had been fixed that day. What he was asking was highway robbery.

i dont disagree with this either which is why you have to be educated.

my son just had his injector pump on his truck rebuilt..if he had gone to a shop it would have been 10-15 hours labor alone to get to the part and another $800-$1000 for a new injector pump.

as it is, he spent a day taking the engine apart & fedexed the part to a rebuild shop who turned it around in 2 days for $280.

so yes, he spent alot of time doing the work but saved probably $1500-$2000 or more having a shop do it.

what i'm saying is there is a reason why candy bars are $1.50 at the checkout counter at walgreens but you can buy a 5-pack for $4 at a grocery store.

HVAC guys will tend to charge more when they think they have you over-the-barrel (100 degrees and you need it to work ASAP) but thats generally how the market works.

ever try & book a last minute flight?
