This topic intrigues me because I come from a tiny town in East Texas with a pop. of 4,900.

Let's see if this can blow your mind.

Jeff Traylor left Gilmer in February after 15 years as head coach to become an assistant football coach at the University of Texas at Austin. During his tenure at Gilmer, where his record was 175-26, his teams won state titles in 2004, 2009 and 2014, and also reached the state championship games in 2007 and 2012.

His salary was in excess of 150K (HFC and AD). Here is the kicker... his total football salaries - his and his assistants - was in excess of 700K.

When i was a senior in 2002-2003 down in the RGV my coach made about 90k. He was also the AD. Some baller salaries at the big schools across the state.

I bet these schools have donations/sponsorship revenues in the several hundred thousands of dollar range.

you know why? because they ask for it and know that's what it takes to compete in Texas

if you have a similar size high school in another state, they won't even dream of having a video board, they'll keep the coach no matter how many games he loses, etc.

They generate a ton of money for their school and contribute heavily to the community. They also directly influence around 100 students and indirectly contribute to the students involved in the band, cheerleading, and trainer staff. Not to mention, the better the program, the more opportunities there are for scholarships.

You could say the same for teachers. They're influencing the minds of lots of kids and altering their trajectories after HS - college, future job, etc.

Only a few kids at a given HS are ever going to play football professionally. A huge number of kids will become doctors, lawyers, etc. The academic scholarship dollars will far exceed the football scholarship dollars at most schools.

I'm not against paying coaches for their contributions, but it seems odd that most teachers make substantially less, no?

I'm in the not as outrageous as I would have thought camp. Those guys work a lot of hours and their performance is under more scrutiny than most. They are also profesionals with degrees and are at least 5 to 10 years into their careers before they start making that kind of money. Hell we had head coach in a town of 3.5k in La making in the 90k range.
