There is obviously an issue, but it is not with the type of vehicle, but rather Tesla's inexperience with the technology. They just haven't made cars for long. Their only previous car was a Lotus with batteries in it.
So this is really their first model.

(actually unfair comparison as that is the first ever car, vs the 20th ever electric car)
I think for a first ever vehicle from a ground up company the S is a solid car. But I do find it funny that they sued Top Gear over comments about battery quality, when now it looks like Jeremy Clarkson knew exactly what he was warning British consumers of.
