I am considering getting a cargo box to install on my roof for family trips etc.

I have factory crossbars on the roof when I purchased the car. However, there is a big sticker on the crossbar saying not to load more than 100 pounds. The cargo box weighs 50 lbs alone so that is nearly pointless to buy.

Then I check my owners manual, and it says you can load 220 lbs max. Now that is better, but why does it say 100 lbs on the crossbars?

The info I have received from word of mouth is that the crossbars, not the roof rails, are rated at 100 lbs. Secondary market products like Thule offer bars that can handle 165 lbs.

Before I spend money on aftermarket crossbars, has anyone ever had issues with factory crossbars? Sounds like a lawyer just covering their company's arse. I don't feel like wasting money but I feel like there is a reason the bars state to keep it under 100 lbs. Also, if this thing rips off the roof at 70 mph and causes an accident I wonder how my insurance company would react to me overloading the crossbars..

Is the 100 lbs just lawyer cya, or are factory crossbars really that worthless?

Any input is appreciated.

U sure it's not 100lbs each for a shade load total of 200 lbs?

I'm thinking that's the case and that you're good with the factory bars. I've loaded easily 200 lbs + the weight of my cargo carrier on the factory bars for a Tahoe, suburban, and Honda odessy

It's probably 100 pounds per crossbar.

i'd get a hitch rack instead or just get a small uhaul. the gas mileage you lose by having a roof rack sucks.

100# each. So 200# is safe. I would stick with factory.

If that is the case for 100 lbs per bar then to you.

I am looking for people who have loaded over 100 lbs on their factory crossbars and if they had issues. I am pleased to hear of your experience. Thanks.

And I am also looking at a hitch mount. I may have to get both and live the Griswold life.
