Unfortunately lost my mom unexpectedly last week and we are dealing with several things in taking care of her belongings and such as you can imagine

I was paying the insurance on her car for the last couple years. No one will be driving the car and it will be sitting up until sold or traded in for another vehicle (max 6 months I would say).

We are going to surrender the tags and I want to drop the insurance to save the money. Can I go ahead and drop it before turning tags in or should I wait until the tags are turned in?

Can you surrender tags to a title place or do you have to go to the DMV?

Complicated by the fact that I am in school hours away so having to rely on my sister to turn tags in but she is having trouble getting away from work to do it right away but I'm hoping to drop insurance before next payment.

TIA

Get the tags in first or they'll fine you if you drop insurance.

Absolutely do NOT drop the insurance until you have paperwork of cancelled registration in hand. The state recently was going after people for all kinds of bullshite reasons related to insurance; things like "insurance lapsed a day because I traded in a vehicle, cancelled the insurance, and notification of insurance cancellation got to the DMV before the bill of sale".

Don't give this corrupt state any reason to try to steal from you.

Sure. They don't have tags sitting on the dealer's lot. In Louisiana, the tags are attached to both the car and the owner.

You don't have to wait in line to turn in a tag. Just walk up to the counter and they will take it, and give you a receipt. Then call your insurance and drop the coverage. You can do it the other way around but make sure you explain to your insurance what you are doing. That way they don't cancel your coverage before you have time to make it to the DMV to turn in your tag.

If it was me, I'd turn in the tags first to avoid a possible headache later. If you've already paid insurance for this month, you should have a few weeks to take care of it.

When I moved to Texas, I dropped LA insurance before I got TX tags and they sent me a letter saying I owed all these fees for not having insurance, so I had to call and sit on hold and have my new TX insurance company send a letter. It eventually got taken care of but I would avoid if possible.

Turn tags in first.

I've turned them into title places with no issues.

If you're going to trade it in, keep coverage until after you trade it in and purchase a new car. Unless you plan on trailering the vehicle to the dealership.

You can cancel the plate online now at the OMV website.

Will need the tag#, VIN, and a few other pieces of information about the owner (address, etc.)

Just did it last week.

Make sure you turn in the plate first and get a receipt from DMV or title place you turn it into. Insurance companies do electronic reporting to DMV based on VIN #'s for when they start/stop insuring a vehicle. So if you drop the insurance, the insurer will report to the DMV that they no longer insure that vehicle and without another insurer reporting that they're insuring the vehicle, the DMV will flag it as an insurance lapse and end up issuing a fine.

If you're trading it in, this is your best and safest route and you won't have to cancel anything but insurance:

Who's got power of atty for mom? That person needs to go with your sister to the dealer to donate the car to the dealer aka trade it in. Once you get that signed and done, then drop insurance immediately or next day if buying car at night.

You also may wish to know that the vehicle can be sold or donated without a succession proceeding and Judgment of Possession. You would just need an affidavit signed by the heirs to go along with the sale, and the form is available at any title transfer place.

BTW, what kind of vehicle? I may be in the market. I recently bought my aunt a car from an estate and that worked out well for all concerned.
