quote:

He's an attorney who is as controversial as some of his clients. Mike Small has defended everyone from former Governor Edwin Edwards during the "Cascade Case," to Amanda Gutweiler for the death of her children in a house fire.

His next client is already making headlines.

Small says he didn't even remember the Frank Szelas (also spelled Selas in some court documents) case from 1979. But, like every single case he's come to encounter in his career, it sort of fell into his lap.

"Highly regarded lawyers in one state know how to locate highly regarded lawyers in another state," he said.

That other highly regarded lawyer is Mark Carlos in California. He'll be joining Small as co-counsel defending Szelas, known to most as Mr. Wonder.

Szelas faces 13 counts for the alleged 1979 sexual assault of a child on a camping trip in Rapides Parish. The former KNOE in Monroe children's TV show host hosted the trip.

As law enforcement zeroed in on him, Szelas fled the country and wasn't captured until this past January. It seems like an open and shut case - unless you ask Mike Small.

"I'm not assuming at all that my client is guilty," he said. "I'm assuming quite the contrary that he's innocent. He's certainly presumed innocent at this point."

Mr. Small is the real deal but that comes at a hefty price. I wonder where the defendant got that kind of cash?

Not sure if Superlawyer was a reference to that magazine that "awards" the title of Superlawyer, but if it is you do know it's a solicitation you pay for and has no correlation with ability right? But in Small's case he is a very good lawyer if not one of the best in his field, but it's just a coincidence as per that copyrighted title (if that's what you meant)

I agree. There is no place for defense attorneys or a vigorous defense in our society. When accused by the government, ones options should be limited solely to arguing for the best penalty possible. The government would never accuse an innocent man or levy the wrong charges. In fact, we could save a ton of time and money by doing away with the Judiciary Branch and just allowing the prosecutors to serve as the final determiners of guilt as well. If you don't commit crimes you should have no problem with this idea.

In that case I hope he has a heart attack and can't take the case. Selas is a piece of shite who molested multiple children then fled the country. Put him in gen pop then let the guards have a 15-minute break.

Agreed! Read my second post. This guy doesn't deserve a defense! We should just shoot him in the face since we know he did it. You know right? You were there? Did he touch you?

I don't know why we bother with trials and juries. The truth is obvious. The Sheriff says he did it and that is good enough for me. Maybe we can bring back lynchings.
