Sulphur or rotten egg smell in the house
I notice this smell from time to time but it's not continuous. I have noticed it more often during summer months especially on really hot days and mostly after the house has been closed up all day while I'm not home.

I have smelled the water and water heater but no luck in finding the source. It seems to go away after few hours while I'm home but then reappear randomly when I walk in the house after being away for few hours.

Anybody have an idea? Also no natural gas lines in the area and I don't think I have Chinese drywall.

Do you live near a paper mill?

re: Sulphur or rotten egg smell in the house
I thought about a drain but when I smell the drains they don't have a strong odor. Could it just be like a sudden burst of smell coming in from a drain and filling my house with the odor and then goes away which is why I can't smell it coming from a drain after I'm home?

City water

Well then, that rules out the most obvious answer.

Another idea...check your A/C plenum (I think aka as a distribution box) in your attic (or where ever it's located) for moisture build up. If it is holding moisture you may have a mold problem in your A/C vents.

Another idea...if you have a drain that you rarely use the p-trap may be dry and sewer gas is backing up through the drain into your house. This is an easy fix. Just use the drain.

Look for p-traps on your drain. Most likely it is a dead rat/mouse that died behind the wall

This sounds just like Chinese drywall. I would double check.

I use all the drains daily and the smell is located mostly in kitchen/living room area not the other rooms. This is why I didn't think ac unit.

Guarantee its something dead in the cabinet or wall. I had something die behind the wall of my half bath. The only thing we could do was turn on the vent and febreeze every day until the smell died down. If you're an lsu student, walking in Patrick Taylor I get whiffs of that same smell.
