A girl at 16 is still very much a child mentally and emotionally, physically that may not be. Overall that girl is still a child

Certainly some are - again, people mature at different rates. But, what about 17? What's magical about a single day? Or 18? A year and a day?
I'm fine with age of consent being whatever - I just can't accept that having sex with a willing 16 or 17 year old is the same sort of crime/sin/evil/moral lapse that raping a child of 6, 8, 10, etc. is. I can't, because those things aren't the same.

My boss' dad married his mom when he was 24 and she was 15. This was in the 40's.

And I don't think it should be controversial to say:
Age of consent - 13 is too young, 14 is probably too young and 15 very well might be (at least in 2015). And, 18 is probably too old.
Louisiana is 17 - and I can live with it - I'd rather err on the side of caution, as would most rational people - 16 and 17 are probably where most people are on the issue.
But - again - regardless where we set the arbitrary line (because laws have to be consistent, we can't realistically expect the law to accommodate all varieties of biological progression) - we still must recognize that post-pubescent kids, below the age of consent are still going to want to and ultimately have sex. And, if consent is given at that stage of life (although not legally valid - that's the whole point of the age of consent) - an adult taking advantage of the situation (and it is deplorable behavior, I'm stipulating to that as well) is NOT the same species of criminal as a child rapist (i.e. a person who coerces, cajoles, physically forces a pre-pubescent child into sexual activity).
It cannot be viewed as the same category of offense by rational people, IMHO.
