If so, what was the outcome?

I don't care for the 3rd row seating in the 4Runner. Ground clearance and electronics are essentially the same. Subaru is AWD and I would get the 4Runner with 4WD. 256hp in Outback while 270hp in 4Runner. I have found that they are very, very comparable. Thoughts?

No expert, but I've heard the Subaru is a bit of a pain for maintenance. I think they use a horizontal 6 cyl.

My vote is for the 'runner. I owned a 2004 Limited and loved it. I've never dug Suby's styling.

Possibly problems with the CVT transmission a number of years back, but those things are damn near everywhere now, so I assume all the kinks are worked out?

If you need to tow something or often go up mountain roadways go w/the 4Runner.

If you just need something that can handle shite arse weather and has space for a ski rack go for the Outback.

You can definitely sit much higher in the 4Runner which is something I like if you drive on the interstate in a city.

Those two vehicles aren't comparable at all. One is a real SUV, the other is an awd crossover. Drive both, they won't feel comparable at all. If you need the capability of the 4Runner, it will be worth the difference in ride quality.

The Toyota is a truck based SUV, meaning it has a real frame. It has 4wd which is 4x better than all wheel drive, you have a complete set of lower gearing, and can add Differential locks to that,so that it is like a damn tractor. You can also add a cool arse lift kit. Have you ever seen an outback with a lift kit? I haven't.

The Outback is a station wagon.

you are comparing apples and watermelons

Both are very good vehicles - what you use it for will determine which to buy

Never compared them. I love my 4Runner though. 2011. I don't have the 3rd row seating. I think that is optional. Mine isn't 4WD either.

No, but in the Northwest where people actually depend on their vehicle to cross mountain passes on snow covered roads Subarus rule.

I'm trading in my 4Runner for a 2016 Outback.

Both are great. The AWD is actually better for shitty on-road conditions. It actually has more ground clearance than my 4Runner too.

I don't mud ride or need a lift because I'm not 17 years old or white trash.

The 3.6 6 cylinder is plenty engine for me too. I was told by a mechanic of 30+ years that 4Runners and Outbacks are the two most reliable vehicles he's ever worked on. It's personal taste and about what you need.

If your a dude, and I assume that you are, get the 4Runner. It's the smallest and one of the only SUV's that you won't look like a gay in. Seriously

I have a 2014 Outback. It's a fantastic vehicle that we intend to keep for a very long time. Excellent snow and ice traction, good clearance, and a very comfortable interior. They've made the interior much nicer for 2015.

I've rented the new 4Runner a few times when traveling, and I like it very much as well. When Toyota changes the front end, I'm going to buy one to replace our other car.

Some people need to leave the south.

There's a reason Outbacks are everywhere in the northwest where they have snow and ice issues in the mountains.
