They are staying everywhere. Last Saturday night we were downtown and most major intersections on Poydras had police helping them cross.

It's pretty crazy.

Is this the largest convention numbers wise that the city has seen? Obviously this city is a hub for conventions, but 25k kids plus probably another thousand or so adults. That's a HUGE group.

but why in the hell would a YOUTH RELIGIOUS convention choose the home of booze and strippers?

1) Because these groups love the chance to evangelize

2) Because these groups are big on community service. Many of them came after Katrina to help and gosh knows we still need it.

3) Because it's hot as Hades here, and there aren't any major conventions in town. The hotels and the meeting places give them great deals just to fill up space.

What culture is that? A bunch of hippies parading around the quarter with umbrellas and top hats?

You talking about them fatass cornbread bitches? I've only met one of those. Most are from the Northeast.

Although some bars have changed, there are enough locals for New Orleans to not lose its culture

The convention is from July 16 - 21. They have activities in the convention center during the day and mass events with all 25,000 in the Dome every night. All the hotels are within walking distance of both. They will also be involved with quite a few servant events around town. This gathering happens every 3 years and I think this is the 4th or 5th time they've come to NO.

No doubt it's a huge group. Events like Essence and Bowl games and the like bring a lot more people, but as far as a pure convention, it's one of the biggest of the year, no doubt.

We are usually good for a couple 30K plus conventions each year, maybe one in the spring and one in the fall.

This website is pretty cool for seeing who is in town.

Also because there are very few cities that meet the criteria this group needs:

1. Large convention type spaces
2. Large arena for 25,000+
3. Enough hotel rooms within walking distance to both of the above.

For a while the only two cities that met all the criteria were NO and Orlando so the convention bounced between those two cities. 3 years ago it was in San Antonio but some kids had to be bussed in from hotels.

If they start doing it in NOLA they'd be adapting to the local culture, no?

Just FYI the Lutheran church is split into a bunch of different subdenominations. The two biggest are the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS). In 2009 and 2012 the ELCA Youth Gathering was in New Orleans (it was in Detroit in 2015). This current convention is the LCMS Youth Gathering. I think it might be the first time the LCMS has had their national youth convention in New Orleans (it was in San Antonio in 2013).

Mainstream Lutherans aren't evangelical. I think there are a couple sects of Lutherans though.

Not going to lie, I would lock my car door if I saw them walking down the street. Never can be too safe.

Looks like the ELCA (ie, hippies) is coming next month. They had to spread them out to avoid a holy war.

Nope, not the first time by far. (I'm an LCMS member, former youth leader and attended some of those previous conventions.) And I think the ELCA convention in NO a year or two ago was even larger than the LCMS ones.

We don't reject anyone's business.

Plus, anyone that signs a group hotel contract gets added to the list. Which explains some of those 25 person groups.
