So this is a bitch. Going from 50mg of Sertraline down to 25mg (as per doc for a month, then off altogether) and feeling the side effects. Anyone have experience with stepping down/getting off of Sertraline/Zoloft (or other SSRI drugs)?

be very careful

that shite causes a lot of suicide in this world (almost always non-monitored reduction, though)

I slowly weened off of prozac because it was making me feel crazy. Once it was all out of my system I felt great for a few weeks, and then depression crept back up and has been here to stay.

I hope you have better results man. No one deserves that cripling illness.

What kind of side effects and how long have you been taking the lower dose?

Thanks man. For me it is anxiety, not depression. Doc and I weighed the pros and cons of being on Zoloft (side effects vs. results) and I decided that finding alternative ways to cope was the way to go.

So far sweating, nausea, dull & consistent headache. I am sure the dreaded brain zaps are next.

1 Week in.

Good luck and as was said above be careful. I hate antidepressants, they had a worse effect on me than the depression itself.

Hey, whatever it takes man! Actually, we discussed using beta blockers for the specific instances of panic attacks/extreme anxiety (if and when they happen). Also controlled breathing and other stuff that sounds like it may or may not work.

On Celexa for the second time. Also for anxiety. First time, weened off, definitely had side effects like irritability and the brain zaps. But all in all, getting off it wasn't that bad. But once it was all outta my system, the anxiety came back like a fricking freight train, so i started back on it about 6 weeks ago. Wish I would have never stopped, but everybody's different.

I hate that I have to take something to maintain myself...

I'd just give it more time, I think it takes a few weeks.

My anxiety symptoms have been getting worse for 2 years now. I get the shooting chest pains that last about a second or two. Debating whether to get put on the meds or not. What yall say?

Those brain zaps were the weirdest damn feeling in the world. Scared the hell out of me first time it happened.

Have you tried talking to a therapist? My anxiety got so bad I had to do something. I couldn't sleep, was getting nervous almost 24/7, constantly obsessive worries. I do counseling, but it wasn't enough for me. I just hate the stigma they have, hate that I can't just be normal..

All that said, if you've tried other options and you are really struggling, go see your primary care doctor. But you gotta be in it for the long haul, they certainly dont work overnight. Or even in a month in my case

I had the brain zaps before. Thought I was having a stroke. But im only 24 and in pretty decent shape and eat decent so I figured it wasnt.
They are trying to slowly decrease my moms because she has been on them so long they barely work anymore. So i know its hereditary and i will have it forever

My father has serious anxiety issues now. He was always a "worrier" but I really think since the flood it is to the point where he has issues just coping day to day. He calls me at least once a day stressed over stuff (I'm talking the smallest things too). I think he is suffering from some PTSD type stuff from the stress of losing everything in the flood. Relocating him here to AZ, while the best option for them, has also stressed him out as well cause he lived 68 years in BR and this place overwhelms him.

He has been on antidepressants and is currently on one now...but it's not helping as much. He is 68 though and on a ton of other meds for his health in general. He found a new PCP here in Phoenix so I will go with him to his first appt next week so I can talk to his doctor about just how bad the anxiety is. He has medicare so I'm also gonna see if it would cover him seeing a therapist as well.

YES. This is exactly why I got on them, and it was life-changing (in a good way). There are side effects and frankly everyone is different, but the chest pain thing is what caused me to get on them in the first place. Doc says it doesn't have to be a "forever" pill for anxiety and that is what I am banking on. Hoping I have overcome it w/ the sertraline and can now control future attacks. Good luck!
