For those of you who have lived in this area.. Has safety ever been a concern for you? I have a friend looking to rent an apartment off Tula and we're not convinced its the best place for a single chick. She also has a dog that would be there while she's at work.

Have you guys ever had any issues living here? It's got a bad rap but we're trying to gauge just how 'bad' it is.

Thanks!

Stupid street kids and homeless and general nonsense.

But a hell of a lot safer than most places north of there. Just need to be aware and have good instincts.

Had a friend just get his State Street house robbed (he was at work). This was maybe 2 weeks ago.

That's what were worried about. Plus if anything were to happen to the dog she'd be devastated.

You'll be fine making deliveries there.
They tip well, but they pay by CC, so don't forget to bring a pen.

My ex girlfriend lived at the corner of Tula and State and never felt safe at night.

I wouldn't want my daughter living there but I would survive if it was a son and his friends

A buddy of mine lived off Tula in the house directly behind the (formerly) Serrano's stage. Lots of crackheads in the area who aren't shy and will come knocking. Seriously, lots. Abundant homeless and nightwalkers. Also a guy I know died in that house. Cops set up right on the corner as well, so take that as you will. Same buddy (who was living with the guy who died) was also held at gunpoint in his own living room twice.

ETA: this all happened in a six month stretch starting Spring semester of 2014.

I've never heard of any violent crime in the area. Burglaries are a concern, but having a dog will help to assuage that. The police station is close by and there is often a car stationed on Highland at Chimes. The biggest issues with State Street are the fact that most of the units are either incredibly rundown and shitty and/or prohibitively expensive. If this isn't the case, go on right ahead. The only other issue is that there are a lot of crazy college druggies in the area that do weird druggie things.

Used to live in the area. Tell her to live in one of the gated communities to help keep the crackheads/ heroin addicts away

If one slum landlord would die, that place could be very nice. There are some shady people but its better than in the 90s.
