Anyone ever worn normal black shoes with a tux? I have my own tux that I'm wearing to a wedding in a couple months, but I don't own the shiny tux-specific shoes. I've rented a pair of the tux shoes before, and I just hate that patent leather look. I'm not sure if the incredibly expensive versions look better, but the standard versions look like nothing but shiny plastic.

I need a new pair of clean black shoes and was thinking of just purchasing a new pair to wear with the tux instead of renting the tux shoes. I also like the idea of having the flat finish instead of the bullshite shiny tux shoes.

Thoughts?

If you are in the wedding ask the bride what she wants you to wear. If you are just wearing the tux to the wedding wear whatever black shoes you want. They don't have to be shiny

I have to wear a tux once a year.. I refuse to wear the tux shoes. I've normally just worn a pair of good black dress shoes.. May try and get away with a black pair of chuck taylors this year..

Regular leather (i.e., non patent) is fine. Just make sure there is no brogueing. That's too casual.

Eh, had it for ~2 years, and only because of the amount of overly fancy weddings my friends have and Mardi Gras balls. Much better to have one that looks decent, pays for itself in a couple wears, and wasn't thrown-up on or used a jizz rag by some high school kid the weekend before .

Agreed, was gonna go super clean, I hate brogueing on black shoes anyways.

Then you're not wearing the right size shoes.

regular black dress shoes will look tacky with a tuxedo.

THIS. You are are at an event that calls for a tux, make the effort to dress correctly and it will be noticed. I broke down and bought a pair of good quality high gloss black lace ups and have mentally thanked myself every single time I have worn them. They look great, feel great and I get compliments too. Bonus is they will last longer than me.

Mine are Cole Hann cap toes and they are shiny but not the plastic look patent leather. Look on Amazon, I am always finding good shoe close out prices on there. Spend a couple hundred bucks, or less if you find a sale, and walk in style.
