An ex is dying of cancer.
We had spoken only a few times, she had expressed regret at the relationship ending the way it did and asked for an apology.
Which I of course gave.
Then 3 months ago the diagnosis, it was grim
Saw her this evening at the hospital.
shite,, just love those that are in your life as best as you can. And don't ever stop loving them.

I wanted more, she wasn't ready. she has regrets about that, I was the ONE guy she said she thought about
6 month later she was married to a guy she meet on a plane, moved to Dallas
6 years later, divorced ,moving back to Houston rebuilding her life ,, goes in for physical for new job

at the end she wants those that made her life better to come see her.

Sounds like you did the right thing... If she wants you around then you should try and be there, but not make it awkward for the family. It should be about her not her family right now IMO.

I lost my uncle to cancer last year. It will be one year later this month. It's such a tough time for everyone.
At the end I just took solace in knowing that he moved to a better place. It's tough to see someone go too early but at least they aren't in pain anymore.
The only thing I can say is just try to spend as much time with them as you can. I wish I'd have done that more.
