The WWII aircraft thread has been great. Let's keep it going, but in a new direction. What AFV's (tanks, assault guns, tank destroyers, and SP artillery) have you always thought were the coolest from that time?

For me...

1. German Jagdpanther Tank Destroyer

2. German Panzer Mk VI "King Tiger"

3. American M36 Jackson Tank Destroyer

4. Soviet SU-100 Assault Gun

5. German "Nashorn" Tank Destroyer

I always thought the British tankettes were kinda kitschy-cool

Work horse - Stug III

Elegant, complicated, but the granddaddy of MBTs - Panther

The Poles had a tankette names the "TKS" as well. It didn't exactly prove to be that effective, at least the ones equipped only with a MG instead of the 20mm version. Sadly, this was the vehicle that made up the bulk of Poland's armored forces...

MG Version

20mm Version (Known as the TK-3)

I like the Stug, but I think the long barreled version looked cooler, not to mention was far more effective...

Anything the Germans built with an 88 on it is badass.

Agree. Like the Elefant...

And of course the legendary Tiger...

And the Tiger's step-brother, the JagdTiger (which actually had a 12.8 cm gun though)

What's the story on the King Tiger's "textured" surfaces? Is that a high build coating to add depth or shadows to the camouflage?

Meant to prevent a magnetized mine from being attached to the hull.

That is what's known as "Zimmerit". It was a paste like substance they applied to the outside of their vehicles. starting in late 1943. It's purpose was to protect the vehicle from magnetic mines. Here's a close up view....

The odd thing about this is that it was only the Germans who used a lot of magnetic mines. The Allies really didn't use them.

Churchill

I suppose it's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The Brits made a lot of odd AFV's in the run-up to Overlord and put them in a formation officially known as the 79th Armored Division but more commonly called "Hobart's Funnies"

Some examples...

Churchill AVRE

Used to roll out a carpet so following vehicles would not sink into soft sand

Churchill Ark (with M4 Sherman climbing over it)

Used to allow tanks to scale obstacles like seawalls.

D7 Armored Bulldozer

A common Caterpillar D7 tractor with added armor

That's just a few. They also had things like flamethrower tanks and even searchlight tanks.

Oh no doubt. But sort of like what I did with my airplane thread leaving out such well known examples as the P-51, FW-190, BF-109, and Spitfires, I likewise wanted to mention some of the "others" because I knew tanks like the Tiger & Panther would be mentioned soon enough.

I really do not like the Churchill. My favorites will always be the Sherman and the Stuart (Haunted Tank).

But I had to give the fat, ugly girl some love.

Finally, someone mentions the lowly little Sherman that actually won WWII.

I'll give the Sherman some love, I've always like the M4A3E8 version AKA "Easy Eight"....

(Yes, this is the version that was featured in "Fury")

And although it's never much thought about nowadays, the M8 Greyhound has always looked pretty cool to me as well...
