Sorry, but found the previous tower climbing link a little dull for my taste.
See if you can watch this to the end without breaking a sweat. These are professionals working, not some idiot Russian kids.
LINK
You are not mistaken, they are not tied off to the tower while climbing.

I remember as a kid my parents knew a man who flew crop dusters. He was actually afraid of heights. Wouldn't even climb a tree to help his kid build a tree house !
Maybe the guy in the video is afraid to fly.

I'm not afraid of heights, but there's absolutely no way in hell I'd do that

Why are there so many radio antenna towers anyway? I don't get it. I understand cell phone towers and broadcast towers, which are obvious, but that doesn't explain the plethora of towers out there.
What communications are linked to those things?

They should get $1000 per trip apiece .

Okay, love the down votes, but seriously...
What is transmitted on all the radio towers out there?
You can spot the cell phone towers. You can spot broadcast TV and radio station towers. Other than that, why are radio towers everywhere? It seems like a primitive form of communication.
What communicates on those towers that otherwise isn't done by land line, satellite, fiber optics, etc.?
Do any of you rely on long-distance radio signal transmissions on a daily basis? What for?

Depending on their contract with the tower owner, it is usually $1.00 for every foot climbed. But a lot of those towers have elevators that take you most of the way up.

I did it in the late 90's when I was in my early 20's. The highest i've ever been up was 2000 ft. on ABC33/40 tower in Jasper Al. It had an elevator in it, still took 30 minutes to get to top. The highest I've ever free climbed is the 1000 ft. NBC 13 tower on top of Red Mountain in Birmingham Al. next to to Vulcan statue. I could climb 80 ft. in a minute, would stop and rest for about a minute and a half and then do another 80 ft. My personal best time up and down was the 300 ft. state trooper tower in Dothan,Al.next to hwy 231.I went up, changed 3 bulbs at 180 ft and 2 at 300 ft and was back on the ground in 10 minutes. We also built towers along with performing maintenance on them.
ETA, i also an friends with a guy that that was strapped to a 300 ft.tower when it fell. His body hit the ground in just a slight indention in the ground when the tower landed. He broke almost every bone in his body but survived. He went through countless surguries and was fricked in the head and addicted to painkillers along with being a hard user of any other drug he could get his hands on after the accident but he is a productive member of society today.

I wouldn't do it for $1000 a step.
