[Spinoff] How do you define a hero? Name a hero of yours

After seeing the dad quote from the teenage thread about the kids being heroes, i'm a little aggitated at the thought

So how do you define hero? Who do you consider a hero?

Someone who puts themselves in danger when they do not have to.

I do not consider firemen or police men or anybody who's job it is to go into dangerous situations with being heroes.

They may save a life or two, but that is their jobs. And they shouldn't consider themselves heroes either.

To me, a hero is someone who puts themselves in serious danger to save a life, often with no regard for their own life.

I consider any combat veteran a hero. They put themselves in danger to save American lives, no matter the reason they were sent, that is why they did it.

I have a Grandfather who is 86 and a Marine combat vet from WWII. Greatest man I know or will ever know. He went on to be the DA of my parish for many years and put lots of bad people behind bars. All he has ever done is serve his country and community. That is a hero IMO.

Close behind him is my brother in law. 2 purple hearts in Iraq.

Military people who face combat and fight for our freedom are heroes. NOT sports figures or politicians or celebrities.
Anyone who protects their family from threat is a hero.
It's a way overused term that should only be used in the very rarest of circumstances.

But they took the job to begin with, knowing what they were getting into - and they did it anyway. You fail.

As a fireman, I agree. In most professional fire depts if you call yourself a hero you are gonna get laughed at pretty bad amongst your coworkers. I would say my dad, he raised me as a single dad for several years before he got remarried and had no life. His life was work and taking care of me, not partying qnd such. He did as a parent should, but I still consider him a hero to me.

What if they are heroes, and are really good at it. Not good at anything else, might as well get paid for what you are good at: being a hero.

Anyone who risks their life to save another person is a hero. Or any kind of serious sacrifice for the sake of others, is a hero in my mind. Anyone else is just a role model.

Do you feel the same about 9/11 firefighters?

I can maybe see a "normal fire" (if you want to consider such thing) but those guys went into a building and never came out when everyone else was going the other way.

Was it thier job? Yes. But above and beyond IMO

They are badasses and great patriots, but not all of them are heroes. It's hard to be a hero when you're doing something for money.

Not that I have any reason to believe your claim, but I've never met a soldier, police officer or firefighter who "called him/herself a hero."
