I had a CEO that I worked with from France and he was adamant that a tip was for food preparation, not for un-corking a 100 dollar bottle of wine.

I have always treated food and beverage the same but I get his drift.

I feel like it's one of those things where if you are buying a $100 bottle of wine, you probably arent hurting to tip on it.

While I think its ridiculous that I do tip over it since I only drink beer and wine, yes, you should still tip over beer and wine, as easy as it is for your bartender to serve it.

Are you suggesting that if you go to a bar and drink for 4 hours and order a small appetizer, that you should only leave a dollar or two for the app?

I think he's talking about a meal with booze, not just drinking at a bar.

And yeah, I typically do.

I tip based on the entire value of the check...but do scale it up or down based on the quality of service provided...

If anything you should tip more for the alcohol portion of your check because it is more than likely that your server is having to tip out her bar staff based on the amount of alcohol served.

we were expensing the whole meal and drinks, but he would analyze the bill and tip 20 % on food and 0% on booze.
I saw him neutralized by the 6 plus rule many times and chuckled internally.
He is now relegated to the EU and out of my hair€
