Spin-off: How much money and what was involved with getting your carry permit?

And what is it called in your state?
It's a handgun carry permit (HCP) in TN.
Wife and I each have one.
$65 each for the 8 hour class and range qualify.
~$150 each for the permit. Good for 4 or more years, renew when DL is expired.
Fingerprinting at a separate location.
The 8 hour class was long, but at least the instructor injected humor to keep it interesting.
Some laws are:
No open carry unless you have a permit
"No weapon" signs have the force of law, even for HCP holders, as long as the sign meets state standards
New laws mean car carries the same protection as house
Park carry is legal as long as not within school zone
ETA: Added fingerprinting

About 75 bucks, fingerprinting and a few weeks. No training. Georgia Firearms License.

$150. Fingerprints. Background check. Permit is good for 5 years, I believe. I can't remember how much it is to renew it.

Fill out a form, wait one month on a background check, pay $20 per year for up to 5 years. "Pistol License"
ETA: It's really easy to get a concealed carry permit in Alabama.

Ah, forgot about that...had to do that do and was included in the $150. Georgia makes it fairly easy. I live 6 or less miles from GA border and go fairly often.

That's the estimate from the state, but I can't remember what I actually paid. It varies because the LE agencies do the fingerprinting, and charge what they want for it.

AFAIK in Texas...
140$ for DPS Application, active military free...1/2 off if Senior citizen
~40-60$ for the Class, 4 Hours + proficency test
~10$ for fingerprinting
~200$ total

The class was a PITA (in terms of length) and honestly, it shouldn't be necessary.
LA oughta be a shall issue state, and personally, the whole CCW stuff is bullshite anyway.
Criminals don't bother with a class. This is just $$$ for the state and more importantly, an impediment to people having a gun on their person.

Yes, obviously true.
Georgia is a pretty gun friendly state, especially in the last decade. Counties/cities used to make places off limit, which has been cracked down on. Counties also used to take FOREVER (months) to get you a permit back despite the law's requirement that they do so more quickly. That has largely changed.
One humorous (but pathetic) response has been Fulton County, where Atlanta is. In Fulton, you follow the normal procedures, but you're required to give them an SASE when you apply. Some counties will just mail this to you, but I'm pretty sure Fulton originally required you do this to mail the card back to you.
Now, following their lost ability to drag their feet forever on approvals, they take your envelope and send you a piece of paper saying "your application is ready, come pick it up M-W at our inaccessible shitty downtown location between 10 and 3pm" or something else really inconvenient for almost everyone. It's just sad.

It is. That's how its defined as far as I know...meet the qualification, do the paperwork, and they shall issue you one.
May issue would be at the discretion of the agency.

You are correct, by definition.
My point was there shouldn't be an assload of steps to get one. Run your SSN, no priors, here ya go.
In LA, it's take an all day class, fill out tons of paperwork, (it is at least finally online), go dig up your 25 year-old divorce decree from whatever parish issued it, do fingerprints (when convenient for the local yokel) wait six weeks, get a permit, probably.
Then do the same bullshite five years later.
