I have relatives who lived in the "upper ninth" ward years before Katrina, and that's what they called it. (I'm talking 1930s to 1980.) I'd heard the terms Bywater and Faubourg Marigny but no one I know actually called the neighborhood by those names.

Hipster white people started calling it that because I rarely use to he it called marigny.
