The base model top loader with knobs is around $800-900 plus tax. Why are these worth it? My last HE Kenmore lasted me just 6 years. I'm considering a Speed Queen.

That sucks. My whirlpool is in its 14th year and still going strong. If it does go out, I will get a SQ.

I have always read that they are relatively small capacity and do a shitty job actually cleaning the clothes. What is your experience with them?

On the contrary they do a great job because they fill up with water. All the HE crap give you a puddle of water. We had a $1000+ LG glass top with all the features that would go out of balance 90% of the time then restart. Most of the time it would take 90 minutes to do a load. Just think of all the commercial laundry matts that use SQ. Also Google the video comparing the Maytag vs SQ. The Maytag has a transmission full of plastic. We kept the LG for 13 months then donated it to our church thrift store. It is the most reliable washing machine according CR.

Any other owners of SQs out there that want to chime in?

Just got a Speed Queen top loader yesterday. A few loads in and this thing is awesome! Finishes loads very fast and it's solid as an anvil during the spin cycle. I'm a believer now and it is definitely worth the extra $300.
