We really need to start putting people back in space. Like to Mars and back to the moon. I realize it's dangerous and expensive but the public just doesn't get excited about probes. Politicians aren't going to fund shite that people don't care about.

Did you see it says it takes over 1.5 days to get a signal to Voyager 1 and back, at light speed.

That's far.

It's taken a while, but Orion's first (unmanned) test flight is on December 4th.

What's the projection on this thing crashing into something we don't know about. Or sucked into some black hole?

Also, judging by the tracker, we shot these things off in the same direction. Seems like we could have covered more ground shooting them in opposite directions.

Actually, no.

Both probes gained much of their velocity by gravitational slingshots around Jupiter and Saturn. They had to be right there when Jupiter and Saturn were.

The Voyagers have enough electrical power and thruster fuel to operate at least until 2020. By that time, Voyager 1 will be 12.4 billion miles (19.9 billion KM) from the Sun and Voyager 2 will be 10.5 billion miles (16.9 billion KM) away. Eventually, the Voyagers will pass other stars. In about 40,000 years, Voyager 1 will drift within 1.6 light-years (9.3 trillion miles) of AC+79 3888, a star in the constellation of Camelopardalis which is heading toward the constellation Ophiuchus. In about 40,000 years, Voyager 2 will pass 1.7 light-years (9.7 trillion miles) from the star Ross 248 and in about 296,000 years, it will pass 4.3 light-years (25 trillion miles) from Sirius, the brightest star in the sky . The Voyagers are destined—perhaps eternally—to wander the Milky Way.

Let's hope this is the case and they don't end up in a half assed Star Trek movie.

So, Voyager 2 launched before Voyager 1.

Would have missed that trivia question.

I believe that is one theory of where the Borg came from.

We're still waiting for the real Orion to launch.
