Some good technologies came out of it but that would be the case with any system developed. NASA should have developed a much cheaper crew launch system and coupled it with the Saturn V or some other heavy launch system for the big payloads. There was no reason to send that much mass into orbit each time just so they can fly it down.

Anyways here's a shot of one of the back engines, very impressive:

Yeah, finding a way to go into space and return in the same vehicle to be reused was a terrible fricking idea...

It was a waste of life more than money. This combination of a quest for cost efficiency, along with NASA's ingrained sense of invulnerability ("Go fever") that did in 2 heroic flight crews.

An insult to everything those astronauts achieved and lived for.

In part it was, but at the time they started the space shuttle program quite a few folks thought it would be much cheaper then our previous way of doing things. It turned out to be far more expensive (and dangerous) then expected in practice however.

We did get quite a bit of good science out of using shuttle missions as a mini space station, but it would have been cheaper to simply put something like the ISS up.

It happens though. Cutting edge technology can take a long time to get right. The first few cars were much worse then horse drawn coaches after all.

Both parts that failed were made in Louisiana.

Pretty much anything to do with space is a waste of money. We shouldn't even have space, it doesn't do anything.

Hey if it wasn't for NASA we wouldn't have things like Tang, velcro and smartphone cameras. Get off your high horse!

We could have made a much cheaper reusable vehicle. The shuttle was needlessly complex and large.
