OAKLAND (CBS-SF) – After circulating about California’s Central Valley for several hours, a Southwest Airlines flight heading from Oakland to Chicago’s Midway Airport headed toward Oakland International Airport Wednesday morning to prepare for an emergency landing.

The FAA told KPIX that the plane would attempt to land at Oakland International at around 10 a.m.

The flight – Southwest 2547 with 139 passengers onboard – took off from Oakland at 6:13 a.m. and immediately reported a mechanical problem.

“After takeoff, the Captain in Command made the decision to return to Oakland to check a maintenance item on the aircraft,” Southwest said in a prepared statement.

Southwest had a plane veer off the runway in Nashville about a week ago when its nose gear collapsed.

Southwest has been investigated many times by the FAA for deferred maintenance.

When you have 600+ planes I guess this is bound to happen.

Flight aware says it's at 600 feet and descending.

It's obviously not that big of an emergency if they're still flying around. May as well burn a few hours worth of fuel on the way to Chicago and do an emergency landing there.

Doesn't sound that bad. I took a flight from Nassau on Delta once where the pilot had to call around to have someone give our engine a jump start. The entire Mizzou basketball team was on board as well.

Damn. Looked like it was on approach and then took a 90 degree right hand turn toward where it was circling previously.

Check that, veered a bit right and past the airport.

Edit number 2, apparently flight aware is not real time. It landed without incident.

It was a landing gear indicator issue. The plane has landed safely with no incident.

Flightware just assumed it was going to be late, like all flights.
