Yeah another shave thread. I chime in on all of these.
OP DSC Is Dorco. I have some DE blades that are Dorco. They are my worst.
If a Dollar Shave blade works for you, it's a great deal. They just scraped my face.
DE razors are great. Merkur and Edwin Jagger are both more than satisfactory.
I have an EJ. These razors are pot metal. So they will break eventually. 2-7 years I've heard. Depending on how well you care for them.
I always suggest vintage razors to people. Start with a Gillette Tech. They are classic and as easy to break as an anvil. They can also be cleaned beyond sterile. You can boil them, steam them, soak them in barbicide, whatever. Nothing is living through all of that. The razor will outlive you. To buy a new DE razor of equal durable materials would be $$$. Brands like Feather or Above The Tie. They are great, but $100-200.

Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap or Proraso Original
Georgetown Pottery G20 Shaving Scuttle Mug
Truefitt & Hill No.10 Post Shave Cologne Balm or Tabac aftershave

Get a nice cigar and a brown liquor with a cube of ice and enjoy your shave

Czechs and Speake Tallow Soap in Oxford and Cambridge Scent.. Was Badger and Blades Soap of the year in 2014. It's awesome. I get zero nicks or razor burn since switching and the smell is fantastic.
I have tried Prorasso Red and Green, Taylor of Old Bond Sandalwood and Jermyn St, Truefit and Hill Unscented, eye...
Czech and Speake kicks all thier asses and it's not even close.
Merkur Safety Razor
Some old Badger brush I found on EBay
Feather Platinum. Key is not to take long "strokes" like you would a cartridge, but short little "ticks" like a barber would do with a straight razor. Razor burn comes from friction built up in the stroke. When you use short ticks, friction can't build up.
Shark Stainless is a really good blade to perfect your technique with. Then go Feather
Eta... I just gave my buddy the end of a puck of C&S. He has super sensitive skin and is allergic to a lot of ingredients in Shave soaps, but he said he loved the C&S and was ordering it.

That is why I like sharing information, because you can always find new stuff to try based upon someone’s recommendation
I will try Czechs and Speake Tallow Soap as I prefer soaps worked up in a hot shaving scuttle. Have you tried Mitchells Wool Fat Soap? I Do like TOBS Sandalwood (love it) and have Jermyn St (not crazy about the scent).
Feather blades are the best and there is no need to start with anything else unless you are young and haven’t shaved much.

I've never met a bad man who either shaves as a luxury, or enjoys cigars.
There seem to be certain truths in my world.

I haven't tried the Mitchell's. I loved the Jermyn St. scent. I just didn't find the cream protected my face very well.

I use the 3 pack bics at Walgreens or CVS and IMP they are better than any razor I have ever used.
I do not understand why men pay so much money of fricking razors.
Get a 3 pack of Bics from Walgreens or CVS and they last. I can get 5 shaves out of each razor... I get 3 in a pack and it costs me $6
I just don't get it.

Edwin Jagger DE89
Taylor of Old Bond Street Cream (I like Eton College scent best)
Simpson Colonel X2L Best Badger Brush
Astra platinum blades
L'occitane Cade after shave cream lotion
Some type of styptic pencil
A bowl to lather your cream in
I don't know if this if perfect (what is) but it will get you going for sure.

Lathering the soap in a bowl? I had thought lathering it with brush directly on the face pulled the whiskers up better?
Significant improvement in quality of shave if you later the soap in a bowl, and then apply on face in circular motion? Or is it just something you like to do?

If anyone reads this and does not want to change razors, at least change products.
Brush, bowl, and quality soap or cream. Life changing. Makes something you dread an enjoyable indulgence. I still break out my Schick Hydro on occasion.

I got the Merkur 38c and a sample pack of blades I but ago. Haven't tried feathers yet, but I like the Astra Stainless.
Just using the same Crabtree and Evelyn shaving soap that I've used for years.
Brush is just a drug store badger bristle.
I enjoy my shaved much more since I switched. It doesn't take any longer and it is more ritualistic.

Feather blades
Shave without soap or cream
Incredibly tough beard.
Damn good system. It hard not to love this system, considering the blades are 26 cents apiece. When the blade starts to drag just pop in a new one.

I use:
Merkur 38C
Astra Superior Platinum or Gillette Silver Blue blades
Taylor of Old Bond St. shaving cream (I like St James)
Semogue boar brush
Blades are the most subjective part of the equation. There's no best, just whatever works for you. I think we can all agree that Merkur blades are awful though. Get a sampler pack to see what you like.
